Jurassic #fossil rewrites history of bird evolution reuters.com/science/jurassic-f

Earliest short-tailed bird from the Late #Jurassic of China nature.com/articles/s41586-024

"The newly identified bird, called #Baminornis zhenghensis, joins the similarly aged #Archaeopteryx as the oldest-known #birds. But Baminornis, about 15 cm long, was far more advanced anatomically and a better flier than crow-sized Archaeopteryx, a creature seemingly half #bird and half reptile."

An excellent article on the archaeopteryx fossil recently acquired by Chicago's Field Museum. Archaeopteryxes are reptilian animals with wings and feathers that were an important transitional species between dinosaurs and birds. The Field Museum's specimen may be the most complete and best preserved archaeopteryx in the world, and it's the only one owned by a museum outside Europe.

WTTW NewsThe Field Museum Now Has an Incredibly Rare Fossil Proving Birds Are Dinosaurs. Here’s a Behind-the-Scenes Look at How They Got ItThe Field formally announced to the world what had become a not-so-well-kept secret: The museum had acquired just the 13th specimen known to exist of Archaeopteryx, a fossil often described as the “missing link” between dinosaurs and birds.

The Chicago Archaeopteryx, the Field Museum’s Newest Dinosaur, Meets the Public.

The fossil — of the oldest bird dinosaur known to science, often dubbed the “missing link” between the two organisms — is only the 13th #Archaeopteryx specimen ever announced. Just two of these are found in museums outside of Europe and of those two, the Field’s is the only one owned by a public natural history museum.

Early Cretaceous Bird Had Dinosaur-Like Skull and Bird-Like Body
sci.news/paleontology/cratonav Paper: nature.com/articles/s41559-022

#Cratonavis zhui, a #NewSpecies of #birds from the Early #Cretaceous #JeholBiota, had a unique combination of a dinosaurian skull with an avian post-cranial skeleton, revealing the key role of evolutionary mosaicism in early bird diversification. On the bird evolutionary tree, it sits between members of the bird clade #Ornithothoraces and the more reptile-like #Archaeopteryx.
