On bad days, the constant reminders to move can feel discouraging rather than motivating. While there’s the option to turn notifications off entirely, I still want to track my movement or standing progress in a more flexible way. Flipboard<p>When assistive technology for people with physical disabilities is developed, the final users of it — its “pilots” — are often not involved until the very end. That’s why robotics expert Robert Riener launched the Cybathlon. The technotopian competition takes place every four years — the next tournament is this month in Switzerland and online — and involves eight events including the assistance robot race, in which pilots control a robot assistant from their wheelchairs and the brain-computer interface race, where pilots with quadriplegia use their thoughts to guide an animated avatar through an obstacle course. Serge from Babka<p>I have some pretty out-there ideas around assistive technology and learning disabilities.</p><p>For example, I believe all children should be taught phonics. This is the standard in most countries, but not in the US.</p><p>I believe that for children who have fine motor skill deficit, keyboards are great, but so are gliding pens, such as gel, or fountain pens.</p><p>I believe that for learning language, Esperanto can be an assistive technology, both for a foreign language, and even for someone who is struggling with English.</p><p>I think slide rules should make a return, and would ideally have a larger role than graphing calculators (are these still around?)</p><p>I think that privacy-respecting, FLOSS, and locally hosted AI can play a huge role in education, providing a host of services from explanations, to quizzing, to helping provide outlines and examples.</p><p><a href="https://babka.social/tags/Learning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Learning</span></a> <a href="https://babka.social/tags/AssistiveTechnology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AssistiveTechnology</span></a> <a href="https://babka.social/tags/LearningDisabilities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LearningDisabilities</span></a></p>
