I am running #PhotoPrism on a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB of RAM, using a 1TB SSD as the main and only drive, using the Pimoroni NVMe Base.

So far, I could not properly measure the performance, because I don’t know how to do it, but I am satisfied! Yet, this is definitely not a future-proof solution, since I need way more storage: I still haven’t imported most of my pictures there, and I need to prepare for plenty more to come.

The simplest (yet quite pricey, 261£) option would be to get a Pimoroni NVMe Duo and maximize it with a total of 4TB NVMe SSDs.

I think this is not optimal, though, and probably I could be spending all that money much better… Do you have any advice?

The thing about hosting a personal media gallery is that it requires a lot of resources when indexing the pictures (so only when you add new ones), then it’s super light—correct me if I am wrong, @photoprism. Hence, I’m thinking the best would be an extensible solution where I can add many HDDs and SSDs, without being forced to pump up the other specs too. I would probably be using just one NVMe SSD for the software and the database, and then save everything else in high-performance HDDs, since they are getting cheap and I can get much more storage with less money—of course I am performing a daily backup off-site, as they are more likely to fail, too.

If I am 100% sure that whatever I end up choosing will be solid for many years to come, I am willing to consider spending a bit more on it.

Ich sitze gerade an einem Blog-Artikel über gute Backup-Strategien für Linux. Für die Systemschnappschüsse würde ich es bei Timeshift belassen, da die Anwendung sehr einfach ist. Aber für das Home-Verzeichnis gibt es ja zahlreiche Backup-Varianten. Wobei ich weniger auf die Terminal-Befehle eingehen möchte - also statt rsync eher Grsync, Vorta für Borg hatte ich ja gerade, Pika gibt es noch usw.
Was nehmt Ihr für Eure Backups?

Unsere #Instanz wächst und wächst. Kürzlich hatten wir unser zwei-jähriges Jubiläum. Wir haben aktuell 217 trötende #Rüssel hier auf unserer Instanz und das bedeutet, dass unsere Instanz mit eine der erfolgreichen Instanzen im #deutsch sprachigen Raum geworden ist.

Das bedeutet aber auch, dass der Instanz #Server einiges zu leisten hat. Er muss performant bleiben und er muss groß genug sein, um die ganzen #Tröts mit ihren #Medien wie #Bilder und #Videos zu speichern. Auch der #Backup-Server muss entsprechend dimensioniert sein. Das alles kostet viel #Geld im #Monat, das ich vollständig aus der eigenen #Tasche bezahle.

Wenn es Dir hier bei uns also gefällt und Du nicht möchtest, dass diese Instanz irgendwann in der Versenkung verschwindet, wie so viele andere kleine und große Instanzen auch, dann denke doch einmal drüber nach, ob Du mich dabei nicht ein kleines bisschen #unterstützen möchtest.

Une consigne incombant notamment aux étudiant-e-s, doctorant-e-s, thésard-e-s et autres personnes
qui produisent des #mémoires, #thèse ou autre document qui impacte leur avenir ?

CHAQUE ANNÉE on a des témoignages "J'ai oublié mon sac dans le bus, je perds 3 ans de recherche et de rédaction".

Pénible, lamentable.

Si tienen una Raspberry Pi o similar haciendo tareas críticas como ser un servidor doméstico, no se olviden de hacerse una imágen de la SD cada tanto.

¿Leíste, Martín? ¿Cuándo lo vas a hacer, cuando te des cuenta de que tenés que reinstalar y configurar todo desde cero?
