“Badlands Formations” — A pattern of badlands ridges and gullies in early morning light, Death Valley.

I don’t always photograph at Zabriskie Point — in fact, it was sort of an accident that I ended up there this February. But when I stop there I am always intrigued by the nearly limitless opportunities to photograph small details in the nearby badlands. There are two times of day when I like to photograph this subject. In the harsh midday light, the shadows can produce strong contrasts between the bright and dark elements. Badlands National Park Wall South Dakota So this whole purpose of this trip was: 1. To get away from normal life and to get refreshed a little bit. 2. To hike. 3. To learn some new techniques... 4. And to capture a certain picture that I had in my minds eye. That certain picture was to be the majestic badlands (The grand canyon of the Midwest) in morning or evening light, you know, sunrise or sunset time frame. Well it was only the first evening that we were there did we get any light conditions like I was looking for. So while I did not get the perfect shot I was looking for, I did have a great adventure. Four guys from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul, went to the SD badlands for an early spring adventure. That certain picture was to be the majestic badlands (The grand canyon of the Midwest) in morning or evening light, you know, sunrise or sunset time frame. Well it was only the first evening that we were there. The light conditions were not what I was looking for. So while I did not get the perfect shot, I did have a great adventure. The South Dakota Badlands are a rugged, otherworldly landscape of eroded rock formations, deep canyons, and sprawling prairies. Located in Badlands National Park, this region is famous for its striking layered rock formations, which display vibrant hues of red, orange, yellow, and white due to sediment deposits over millions of years. The dramatic scenery was shaped by wind and water erosion, creating jagged peaks, towering spires, and deep ravines. Badlands National Park South Dakota BW The National Park Services says this... The rugged beauty of the Badlands draws visitors from around the world. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world's richest fossil beds. Ancient mammals such as the rhino, horse, and saber-toothed cat once roamed here. The park's 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets live today. And this is all true, but I think it is even more. It is a place where you can experience the beauty and peace of creation in an almost completely unspoiled way. The way to experience it more deeply like this is to stay in and around the park for an extended period of time. Stay in the park or in nearby Wall Drug then go into the park and go to a very quiet place and just be. Maybe walk silently and just see and feel the space. It feels like you might be very close to heaven. One very odd thing to know is that This park is very close to the Rosebud Indian reservation and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (Do you remember Wounded Knee). This is one of the poorest places in the entire country. Ghost Town Okaton South Dakota in BW Four guys from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul, went to the South Dakota badlands for an early spring adventure. On our way out to the Bad Lands of South Dakota, Barry convinced us to stop off at Okaton, SD which is a ghost town. Barry did the research ahead of time to see where the ghost towns will be in a 50 mile radius of our planned destinations. Barry enjoyed this place a ton. I must say It was fascinating. Okaton, South Dakota, is a small, abandoned ghost town located along U.S. Highway 14 in Jones County. Once a thriving railroad stop in the early 20th century, the town slowly declined as rail travel diminished and agriculture became less sustainable in the area. Today, Okaton is a fascinating roadside attraction for travelers seeking a glimpse into the past. The town features a collection of weathered, decaying buildings, including an old general store, a schoolhouse, abandoned homes, and rusting farm equipment scattered across the landscape. Faded signs and peeling paint give the town an eerie, time-frozen atmosphere.
