Excellent new video from the Māui and Hector's Dolphin Defenders! 🐬

The NZ fishing industry does huge damage to ocean ecosystems but their PR would tell you otherwise. They recently released a video taking viewers 'beneath the waves', to 'muddy, sandy sea floors' where "bottom trawling is low impact".
But bottom trawling killed at least 12 Hector's dolphins in the last fishing year. So we corrected their video for them.

Essential listening. Excellent summary of how a once abundant deep sea fish is now at risk.

Orange roughy are caught by bottom trawling. Trawling destroys the ecosystems where roughy congregate.

Bottom trawling is indefensible, which is exactly why Greenpeace activists recently rebranded bottom trawlers on the Chatham Rise - the same area where roughy are now under pressure.

Key orange roughy fishery - on the Chatham Rise - is on the brink of collapse.

This is a heavily bottom trawled area - where Greenpeace has just been on the Rainbow Warrior campaigning for greater ocean protection.

Bottom trawling destroys seamounts and the coral that grows on them which are key habitats for roughy - a deep sea fish that can live to 200 years old. It's time for bottom trawling to stop.

Did you know that NZ has a massive Exclusive Economic Zone at sea? 🌊

That means that when the Seafood industry representatives say "only 3% was trawled last year" they mean about 68,000 sq km, roughly a quarter of the landmass of the country.

Or "only about 11% has ever been trawled" they mean 465,100 sq km, or 1.7 times the entire area of the land (268,000 sq km).
