My commute to work is fairly tame 5 miles (8 km), but I wish a lot more of it was on the paved bike trail instead of having to use the sidewalk and parking lot (the adjacent streets and drivers on them are less than ideal). So today I decided to track how much of my path was on which surface, here's a breakdown:

  • Residential street: 0.75 mile (1.2 km)
  • Wide sidewalk: 1.5 miles (2.4 km)
  • Bike trail: 1.5 miles (2.4 km)
  • Parking lot (next to an awful road): 0.25 mile (0.4 km)
  • Semi industrial street: 1 mile (1.6 km)

The bike trail segment (pictured) is right in the middle of the commute, which breaks up the cautious and bumpy ride enough on either side.

It's been many weeks since I took a photo of my companion to and from work, the means of transportation that makes me feel young and helps me stay in shape... More and more, the confusion of city traffic makes me believe in the bicycle as the most efficient and fun way to get around

Commute to a medical appointment close to an area it did not explore yet. So let's do squadrating ! :-)

- 6 up to #6619 in Squadrats Standings
- 2361 up to #18063 in Übersquadrat Standings
- 245 up to #19120 in Yard Standings
- 17 up to #7803 in Squadratinhos Standings
- 66 up to #3646 in Yardinho Standings

On the left of the map, it's the airport; it will not be fun to get these Squadrats.

Hey Tim, why do you sort of hate "protected" bike lanes in Portland?

1. They're just gutters not actual infrastructure.
2. Paint and flexible plastic tubes don't protect anyone from anything.
3. If for whatever reason you can't ride in the lane, drivers get extra agro.
4. They get cleaned even less than unprotected lanes.
(not the best picture, showing a sweeper trail having to avoid cleaning the bike lane because bollards are in the way)

I had a nice group ride at the Forum Vélo d’Hiver 2025 event in Montreal! It was a fantastic opportunity to promote bike commuting during winter in Quebec.

I enjoyed meeting many interesting organizations dedicated to encouraging active commuting, including @veloinfo and others not yet on Mastodon.

A ride loop was organized with the police to open the street for bike commuters!

This past week on my commute there has been someone writing homophobic and fascist stuff, so I've been covering it up. This is not to pat myself on the back, but to share how easy it is to carry a can of spray paint with you to make sure those things get covered as quickly as possible so that they know we are there to hold the line. Fascism is persistent, so we must be persistent as well.
