In late February, we experienced four days where our temperatures never rose above freezing, which was a prolonged stretch of frigid weather for this region. On the first day that the temperature made it above freezing, a lot of wildlife seemed to be in an almost-celebratory mood. This roadrunner was out running around, feathers all fluffed up, eating little worms/larvae. The Moment Before

While standing on the pier at Tybee Island Beach, I caught this Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) at the exact moment it committed to a plunge-dive for fish. Brown Pelicans are one of only two pelican species known to hunt this way—the other being the larger Peruvian Pelican (Pelecanus thagus).
