Showdown on the Feeder

This isn’t my best photography, and the composition isn’t exactly something to brag about. But it has that X-factor—a tense moment unfolding at the bird feeder between a male, red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) and a male brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater). I don’t even recall taking the photo; I only noticed it this morning while sorting through my collection, deleting shots I thought I’d never use. This one almost got the axe—until I paused and thought, "Wait a minute…"

Chickadee’s Dance Among the Branches

This image of a Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) is one of my earliest photos of these birds. At the time, I was still learning to handle a camera—honestly, I still am—but, as with everything, I know more now than I did then. My equipment wasn’t quite as advanced either. I believe I used a Canon 90D to capture this shot, though it might have been a Canon Rebel T3. Interestingly, I just looked up that model and found it described as ‘vintage.’ Despite that, the image itself is dynamic—an action shot. I also just noticed something beneath the bird that looks like a crystal, possibly a drop of water shaped by tiny branches.

House Finch Courtship

This morning, I watched a group of house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus). Among them was a single male, and wherever he moved, the gathering of female finches followed. I observed this same behavior last spring—it seems to be a seasonal pattern. At times, the females jostled for position, occasionally engaging in brief scuffles, seemingly competing for proximity to him. It’s a fascinating dynamic to witness. This photo captures the male along with most of the females, though one or two were just outside the frame.

Pine Top Sentinel

This morning was a peaceful sit in the backyard with Charlie, listening to the birds' morning songs and capturing photos of familiar backyard visitors—as well as the occasional exotic guest. This particular image features a great crested flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitus), not a typical backyard resident. I spotted it about 100 meters away, perched atop a pine tree like a Christmas ornament. Thanks to Topaz Photo AI Super focus, the details in this image are sharper than expected, giving it an almost animated quality when you zoom in—me thinks.
