Scott reviews "Flashes in Time" by Mikko Rauhala:

"This short story collection contains sixteen fairly short works of speculative fiction... I enjoyed the entire collection, even if some of them resonated a little more strongly with me than others. I highly recommend this collection - give it a try. You won't be disappointed."

Isola by Allegra Goodman

3 stars

I went into this totally blind, and when I discovered it was based on real historical events, I had to resist the urge to research the true story to find out what happened. I'm so glad I did, because for me the plotting and suspense was the best part. The prose felt weirdly shallow and not like a good choice for the 16th century, and the characters were also a little two-dimensional, especially the antagonist. I did love the way Goodman created an explanation for why the surviving historical accounts vary pretty drastically. She handled that ambiguity creatively, and it also tied in nicely with some of her themes.

My June reading log is coming, but first I had to get out my review of the absolutely stunning Mad Sisters of Esi by Tashan Mehta. This book was published in India awhile ago and I wanted to read it then, so I was ecstatic to see a US publisher had picked it up for publication.

It was so good. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but a tale of proportions this epic within a single book was not it.

Here's to the mad sisters of Esi. And here's to being mad. It wouldn't hurt for all of us to be a bit less logical and a bit more mad.

🆕 blog! “Book Review: The World After Amazon - Stories from Amazon Workers by Xenia Benivolski”
★★★☆☆

This is a brilliant idea for a short story collection. Gather a group of non-writers, all of whom have experienced the dystopia of working for Amazon, and support them to write speculative science fiction. Given how futuristic…

The Translator by John Crowley

4 stars

It's truly impressive how deftly Crowley can move between genres and styles while still retaining his signature eloquence and emotional intelligence. I loved the themes of translation/transformation, coming of age, Cold War paranoia, and the sharply written dialogue. Also, I learned so much from the chapters that featured lost children in the USSR.

There was something missing for me, though, and I can't quite put my finger on it. Perhaps it's just because I've never found poetry as moving as prose. There were quite a few sections about technical poetry stuff like rhyme schemes, plus several full original poems included in the text. It would probably be much more compelling for a poetry lover.

Jay reviews "To Defend a Damaged Duke" by Fearne Hill, Regency Rossingley book 2:

"Plenty of action, family drama, and sex, both anticipated and explicit. It's all quite beautifully written - I loved every moment of this story. Fans of Regency romance will be captivated by this book."
