Dutch Ships Ramming Spanish Galleys near Calais, 3 October 1602, Hendrick Cornelisz Vroom, Cornelis Hendriksz Vroom, 1617
Terror emanates from the bald-shaven and half-naked galley slaves. While the soldiers aboard still have a chance to escape, the enslaved crew remains chained to the rowing benches, condemned to face death by drowning. The Dutch revolt against Spain unfolded primarily at sea, where the Spanish galleys proved powerless against the robust Dutch three-masters that simply rammed into them.

A Couple, Maarten van Heemskerck, 1529
The woman is depicted as an industrious, virtuous housewife. The basket on the wall holds the yarn she has already spun. It has recently been suggested that the sitters are the Amsterdam draper Hubert Pietersz and his wife Trijn Jacobsdr, partly because the ledger on his table reads: ‘Betaelt Hubrecht [= Hubert] boucs.’ It is not clear why she occupies the side usually reserved for men. This important position was traditionally associated with purity and power.

Dolls’ house of Petronella Dunois, anonymous, c. 1676
Various objects in this dolls’ house are marked with the year 1676, which was probably when it was largely completed. It was made for Petronella Dunois (1650–1695), a wealthy orphan who lived with her sister in Amsterdam. The dolls’ house contains a peat loft, a linen room, a nursery, a lying-in room, a reception room, a cellar, a kitchen and a dining room.

Portraits of Sir Thomas Gresham and Anne Fernely, Anthonis Mor, c. 1560 - c. 1565
Sir Thomas Gresham (1519–1579) was the leading English merchant in Antwerp and also the English king’s financial agent in the Low Countries. He and his wife, Anne Fernely, are expensively, yet soberly dressed. Their status is also evident in their choice of painter: Anthonis Mor was one of the pre-eminent portraitists of his day and court painter to the Spanish king
