@ChrisMayLA6 The latter have had two significant effects. The first is to establish the #greens #liberaldemocrats and successive #radcalright groups as competitive in some contexts. The second has been to alter the balance of power within the #conservatives and #labour between local parties and the central organisation in favour of the latter. This in turn has narrowed their basis of support - not to mention their activist base.

Two party politics peaked in the 1950s in the #uk - due in part to barriers to entry by any third party. The #liberals survived by the grace and favour of the #conservatives who had a partial electoral pact with them from 1951 on. Two main factors have reduced barriers to entry since - the value of the deposit a parliamentary candidate provides has dropped substantially in real terms and since 1999 there have been elections based on proportional representation and party lists,
