Early Modern Diplomacy<p>There were different ways in which <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/women" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>women</span></a> could play a role in <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/emdiplomacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>emdiplomacy</span></a>: as wives of <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/diplomats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diplomats</span></a> as princesses and queen consort or as ladies-in-waiting. It was often their position between their family of origin and their new family that enabled them to act as diplomatic brokers and person of contact of foreign diplomats. </p><p>Women had access to places at <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/court" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>court</span></a> that were often inaccessible for men and thus were ideal information gatherers and spies. Early Modern Diplomacy<p>Apart from the general absence of dynastic politics encompassing primarily marriages, the main difference between the European and Ottoman diplomatic venue lay <br>mostly in cultural practices which can be observed right at the beginning of the diplomatic missions to <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Constantinople" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Constantinople</span></a>. </p><p>Before entering the Ottoman capital, European <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/envoys" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>envoys</span></a> <br>were officially welcomed by both Ottoman functionaries and representatives of other non-Muslim states who escorted them through the gates of the city following mutually agreed ceremonial routine based on old traditions. Throughout their stay there, the envoys’ capability of digesting Ottoman rules of interaction was tested on several occasions. Early Modern Diplomacy<p>The SublimePorte was a very specific diplomatic arena. The presence of <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/emdiplomats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>emdiplomats</span></a> there increased significantly between the 16th and 18th century. During this time, European views of the <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OttomanEmpire" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OttomanEmpire</span></a> changed, redefining the sultan’s realm from a dangerous and largely unknown imperium to a potential ally with attractive cultural trademarks. The European representatives and diplomatic outposts in <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Constantinople" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Constantinople</span></a> remained important political links to the outside world for the <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/sultan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sultan</span></a> <br> <br>Following the pioneering example of medieval <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Venice" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Venice</span></a>, several European states created a permanent diplomatic outpost at the sultan’s <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/court" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>court</span></a>, as Zsuzsanna Cziráki outlined in her article on the <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/SublimePorte" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SublimePorte</span></a> as a sphere of diplomatic interaction:</p><p><a href="https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/9783110672008-021/html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">degruyter.com/document/doi/10.</span><span class="invisible">1515/9783110672008-021/html</span></a></p><p> (4/6) </p><p><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/emdiplomacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>emdiplomacy</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/NewDiplomaticHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewDiplomaticHistory</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/histodons" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>histodons</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/adventCalendar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>adventCalendar</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/adventCalendar2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>adventCalendar2024</span></a> </p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/histodons" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>histodons</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/historikerinnen" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>historikerinnen</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/earlymodern" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>earlymodern</span></a></span></p>
Early Modern Diplomacy<p>Like many other <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/emdiplomats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>emdiplomats</span></a> he then moved from administration to <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/emdiplomacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>emdiplomacy</span></a>. Alexander von Greiffenklau zu Vollrads’s diplomatic career started with less important missions to <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Prussia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Prussia</span></a> and as the Emperor’s representative at the Polish <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/court" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>court</span></a>. The unclear positions of residents within the hierarchy of <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/emdiplomacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>emdiplomacy</span></a> led to permanent ceremonial conflicts with other <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/diplomats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diplomats</span></a> there.
