How to make an Aura mask MRI safe:
- carefully cut open top layer above aluminium strip and pry filter medium off
- insert 3d printed plastic replacement
- pull top layer filter medium back over it and sew close
- alternatively a strip of medic tape works similarly well
- remove staples and existing straps
- sew a couple of cloth bungee straps on instead
- enjoy more comfortable and better fit

I've also managed to pry the metal strip loose using long tweezers trough a smaller cut on both ends and remove it, which allows the plastic clip to be threaded in from the side and removes the need to sew close the long cut, but it's quite fiddly and easy to rip the thin top layer. #wearAMask #CovidIsNotOver #CleanAir #maskUp

Huh. For the first time in ages I forgot to bring a KF94 mask with me when I went out today. Oops! Had to rely on one of the emergency medical masks we keep in the car, to pick up drugs at the pharmacy. Fingers crossed that was good enough. There was only the clerk and me in the pharmacy, and I was there for less than 5 minutes.

This is your Sunday #PSA: keep extra masks in your vehicles or backpacks, even if they're medical masks. Any mask is better than no mask. #COVIDIsNotOver

FDA vaccine target LP.8.1, dominant since March, plateaued in April. June sees Nimbus NB.1.8.1, scion of "razor-blade throat" XDV, push LP.8.1 out of majority.

#CDC added NB.1.8.1 only in latest, late-published public dataset. Notice of "software error" that heralded data delay… has been removed. Hatching for "less reliable" data reflects "low numbers of sequences being reported".

Raj's dashboard, updated this morning, shows Nimbus diversifying in May. Also, XFJ significant, even if CDC hasn't broken out.

We're having a wave in our part of the world - a 6 percent positivity rate (whatever that means in a population that doesn't really test) and we had to head out to get something from our nearby town.

Despite knowing what I've learnt about people in the past 5 years, I still find it so weird that they go around maskless - particularly in a wave - breathing on each other, willingly getting sick.

It's such bizarre behaviour

I’m going to cry. My friend in her early 40s who contracted Covid last month driving a bus for graduations just found out she has a heart problem. She never had a heart problem before. The 4 to 6 or 8 or however many Covid shots she’s had didn’t save her. She doesn’t wear a mask because she’s a Democrat who believe believed the Covid vaccine would save her and now she has a fucked up heart.

“We gave the virus optimal conditions to keep developing and wanted to see whether it would eventually attenuate—basically weaken—over time. It didn’t,” Dr Foster said.

“In all cases, by the time we stopped, the viruses were still growing happily and picking up mutations.”

There were new mutations which popped up repeatedly in different strains – a phenomenon known as convergent evolution – as well as changes which mirrored those seen in real world outbreaks.

The similarities suggest the virus may be naturally inclined to develop certain changes, regardless of the environment and external pressures, said senior author William Rawlinson, a Conjoint Professor with the School of Biomedical Sciences.

Some mutations which help the virus adapt may be driven by the makeup of the virus itself, rather than a bid to evade immunity, he said.

“Some of the changes we saw in humans were also happening in vitro, which suggests it’s not just about transmissibility or immune evasion—it’s also about the structure and function of the virus itself,” Prof. Rawlinson said.

“They could develop these important mutations even in the absence of a catalyst.”

Covid is on the rise again in Aotearoa. The new, highly transmissible variant NB1.8.1 is the dominant variant now (58.3% according to poops.nz).
RNZ has written an actually useful article for a change: Covid-19 isolation and testing rules in 2025: What you need to know
"So five days of isolation is really an absolute minimum. To protect those around us, we should all take extra precautions for a few more days, such as wearing a mask and delaying visiting friends and family members who might be vulnerable."

"Aside from staying home when sick, clean indoor air and good quality masks are highly effective protections that NZ has been really slow to pick up. Once we do, we'll never want to go back to the same level of sickness we experience each winter."

RNZ · Covid-19 isolation and testing rules in 2025: What you need to knowPar Nik Dirga

When you're out in the streets for mass mobilization demonstrations, do not leave your disabled comrades behind. Mask up in a high-filtration mask. Something like an N95 or better.

We need you to mask up to stop the spread of COVID and other airborne pathogens – especially in this era of abject abdication of public health.

Liberation happens in community. We have to embrace that we are intertwined. We have to act like it.

Mask up for solidarity and as liberation praxis. N95 or better to filter airborne pathogens.
