mr_daemon<p>Some time ago, I was asked to share notes and details of how I archived my old CDROM media and I did reply in the thread, but never really posted the guide I wrote otherwise.</p><p>So here is the crappiest guide to dumping CD/DVD images on Linux/Unix-likes, in case it happens to be of use to anyone.</p><p><a href="https://gist.github.com/mrdaemon/925f149da05b92cf3aea3f3a38f9db3e" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gist.github.com/mrdaemon/925f1</span><span class="invisible">49da05b92cf3aea3f3a38f9db3e</span></a></p><p><a href="https://untrusted.website/tags/cdrom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cdrom</span></a> <a href="https://untrusted.website/tags/dvd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dvd</span></a> <a href="https://untrusted.website/tags/DataArchival" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DataArchival</span></a> <a href="https://untrusted.website/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> <a href="https://untrusted.website/tags/tutorial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tutorial</span></a> <a href="https://untrusted.website/tags/iso" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iso</span></a> <a href="https://untrusted.website/tags/DiskImage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DiskImage</span></a></p>
mr_daemon<p>Oh my FUCKING GOD</p><p>I finished dumping 99.99% of a very old, damaged, backup CDROM that was previously unreadable. It took 3 days and I was super excited to find out what old data I put on it. The disc had UDF sessions, because that was common at the time for just Adding Files to non-rewritable media.</p><p>So I mount that shit in my Windows 98SE box, and lo and behold, this is all that was on it.</p><p>I would be absolutely upset if it wasn't so fucking funny</p><p><a href="https://untrusted.website/tags/cdrom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cdrom</span></a> <a href="https://untrusted.website/tags/DataArchival" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DataArchival</span></a> <a href="https://untrusted.website/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a></p>
mr_daemon<p>In the process of dumping my old media, and my main takeaway so far is:</p><p>20$ per disc Verbatim with the azo blue coating highest quality, stored properly, looks pristine: Mostly unreadable</p><p>30$ per spindle of 300, Cursor Colorful brand shitty see through discs in 6 colors visible from planet neptune that explode if you expose them to direct sunlight, stored loose in a crate near the water heater, flaking off, visible dark spots and holes: reads 99.9% fine.</p><p>azo = snake oil</p><p><a href="https://untrusted.website/tags/DataArchival" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DataArchival</span></a> <a href="https://untrusted.website/tags/cdrom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cdrom</span></a></p>
