…For an event that shut down much of central #DC, closed roads, & reportedly cost up to $45M, the promise of a #display of America's #military might—that just coincidentally happened to fall on #Trump's birthday—didn't exactly draw out legions of his fans. Instead, the crowd of supporters, servicemembers, curious locals, & military-adjacent spectators who braved the oppressive heat & humidity of a post-thunderstorm DC managed to just fill out their allotted…[space], w/ PLENTY of room to spare.

RP2040 — POV Display

Sometimes, a flat display just won’t cut it. If you’re looking for something a little rounder, perhaps your vision could persist in in looking at [lhm0]’s rotating LED sphere RP2040 POV display. As you might have guessed from that title, this display uses an RP2040 microcontroller as its beating [or spinning, rather] heart.

An optional ESP01 provides a web interface for control. <https://youtu.be/TCV0LSV6ubA> Since the whole assembly is rotating at high RPM, rather than slot in dev boards [like Pi Pico] as is often seen, [lhm0] has made custom PCBs to hold the actual SMD chips. Power is wireless, because who wants to deal with slip rings when they do not have to? [lhm0] has also bucked the current trend for individually-addressable LEDs, opting instead to address individual through-hole RGB LEDs via a 24-bit shift-register. Through the clever use of interlacing, those 64 LEDs produce a 128 line display.
[ImageSource: lhm0] The LED-bending jig is a neat hack-within-a-hack. [lhm0] designed and printed an LED-bending jig to aid mounting the through-hole LEDs to the board at a perfect 90 degree angle.

I really liked this tactile exhibit at Mammoth Cave National Park. It shows cave life to scale with a penny, and the models are really well done in 3D. The penny was sized to make the critter model display well, so even the tiny amphipod is tactically interesting even though the penny is mega-oversized (pennies are also in 3D for tactile pleasure).

Cave Crayfish, specifically the Orconectes pellucidus. The eyeless crayfish grows to more than four inches long. It has no pigmentation in its....and the stupid preview makes it I cannot see the rest of the text to put it here. It is a predator and will eat invertebrates in cave pools and streams. Above this text is a 3D model of the crayfish, with a real size penny for scale underneath it. The structure is accurate, and is visually and tactally pleasing.
Northern Cavefish, Amblyopsis spelea. This is the larger of the two cave fish that occur at Mammoth, and it can grow to five inches long, live up to 60 years and even go two years without eating. The scale model above the penny shows more the average size, not the max 5 inches. There's a lack of eyes and it has fluffy looking fins.
Cave Amphipod, specifically the species Stygobromus vitreus. They are tiny and eyeless crustaceans well adapted to cave life. The penny is very oversized, but still 3D. On it is the amphipod, which takes up about the size of Lincoln's body and that's it! Super leggy and segmented wee thing
Kentucky Cave Shrimp, Palaeomonias ganteri. Food is scarce in the cave's underground waters. In the perpetual darkness, natural selection favored increased sensitivity in taste and touch and discouraged eye development in animals like this cave shrimp. They graze on bacterial films in the streams and on tiny organisms in sediments. The scale model shows an enlarged penny (but not quite as big as with the amphipod) and the shrimp with its huge long antenae are around the edges of it. The shrimp is about the size of the penny, but the antenae are even longer than it is in body!

One of the things that REALLY annoy me about new electric cars: Touch Screens and touch "buttons", instead of knobs, wheels, levers, and actual buttons.

I am happy to see that some manufacturers are bringing the tactile muscle memory physical stuff back, because you could just as well have a large smart phone in the center dashboard.

If anything has been proven truly accurate - it is that using those while driving a car is a major safety risk to yourself and others.
