A new dataset and analysis released by World Resources Institute finds global tropical forest loss jumped to a record high in 2024, with 6.7 million hectares worldwide.

In total, the area of forest lost in 2024 is nearly the size of Panama.

For the first time, fire, not agriculture, was the primary driver of primary tropical forest loss, with Latin America badly hit.

This past weekend I met up with @morgancarmont to go explore the forests of #VancouverIsland. To say we had an epic weekend would be an understatement.

Amongst our many adventures, we found a new #oldgrowthforest to explore and I had to take a photo in front of one - the size of them is just incomprehensible otherwise. For reference, I am over 187cm tall. This single Big Leaf Maple is easily 10m diameter at its base.

An enormous Big Leaf Maple, easily 10m diameter at the base. I stand 187cm tall, and the nearby branch is nearly as thick as I am tall. It's incredible to see this behemoths still in nature.
