Apple’s “notarisation”: blocking software freedom of developers and users!

The #DMA is supposed to shake up the power of tech giants by giving developers and users more choice.

Apple’s “notarisation” of mobile apps contradicts these objectives. A civil-society complaint against Apple’s monopolistic control over app distribution aims to change that.

I tallied up which #freesoftware repos I have to modify every time (¹) I want to see the effect of my #wayland work:

- wayland-protocols
- wayland-rs
- smithay-client-toolkit
- winit
- maybe xilem
- smithay, twice
- my own input method demo

And then hopefully upstream it all.
Rinse and repeat for 4 to 8 independent changes. Can your project beat the admin overhead of that :P?

Thanks @nlnet for support!

¹ for input-method-side-only stuff winit and xilem are left alone.

Our fundraiser to "Sustain and Strengthen" GNU Guix has been running for a month. Time for a post on how we're doing:

guix.gnu.org/en/blog/2025/upda

We're at about 40% (€6562) of our €15000 annual goal. And, over 100 people have become recurring supporters - pledging between €10-€30 each month. This is a great start and we really appreciate everyone who's donated to Guix! 🙏

People have contributed through both our @fsf hosted funds and through Guix Foundation. Every donation help!

Excited to see how it goes through the next few weeks and what it means for the projects sustainability. 💪

@civodul I don't see a paradox. Stallman never talked about #opensource. He came up with a term #FreeSoftware. Open source was coined in nineties to make free software marketable and it is the market forces that are driving value extraction and work apropriation out of open source.

If we'd like to avoid that, we'd need to move software production and maintenance out of the market, which partially is the case already. There are two models for that: 1. nationalization 2. voluntarism/care work

@codemonkeymike @tommi @libreleah If you're buying used from Minifree, you're not using your dollars to support Lenovo, you're using your dollars to support Libreboot.

Depending on how far the supply chain rabbit hole you want to go, buying a Framework supported most of the typical east-asian component producers, buying System76 supports Clevo, etc. There is no fully ethical electronics supply chain. We simply have to make the best decisions we can.

Gently used laptops and phones running Free Software is as close as we all can get to ethical and free computing. Frustrating? Yes. Still worth the trouble? Hell yes. #Linux #FreeSoftware

@Anachron I'm doing two a month, only $5 each and I change it up every month rotating between those I'm using most regularly. Every now and then I'll add in another that may become a part of the regular rotation or may just be a one-off.

Some examples:
Next on the list and new:
Inkscape
KDE

Regulars:
Wikipedia
Signal
Trisquel
Mint

One-offs/occasionals
