#GWU had students arrested & barred from campus, sanctioned orgs, modified policies, closed quads, brought in extra security, & more that I say obstructed too much legit #speech. Even built an ugly fence in Trumpian style - maybe if they’d gilded it!
All called “no meaningful action” and demands for “immediate remediation … and related reforms.” Testing social sciences theory is tough but pretty tidy proof “anticipatory obedience” won’t save you! #law #academia #higherEd justice.gov/crt/media/1410936/

I teach zoology at university and I come across people (not my students but working people) who don’t see the value in zoology.
Firstly I don’t really understand why they’d think that…zoology is the animal side of ecology, so understanding animals is pretty important if you want to protect biodiversity.
Secondly, I’m kind of tired of this expectation that subject experts and teachers are the ones that need to argue against such attacks based either on ignorance or bad faith.

"Not only did Columbia and the Trump administration have detailed exchanges about altering the university’s disciplinary proceedings — especially in how they impacted protesters — but new rules regarding disciplinary procedures were also imposed on the university by its powerful board of trustees in a manner explicitly outlined by the Trump administration.

Though Shipman said Columbia’s academic independence was the school’s “north star” during the negotiations, the private research university has made several concessions on academic functioning in its agreement with the federal government. And Shipman said that Columbia retains control over its operational decisions, yet the deal with the Trump administration includes clauses such as one in which the university has agreed to “examine its business model and take steps to decrease financial dependence on international student enrollment.”
(...)
A key element of the agreement was the appointment of a third-party “Resolution Monitor” to oversee compliance.

The man selected for the role, Bart Schwartz, is the co-founder of Guidepost Solutions, which sponsored an event in June 2025 “helping Israel heal and rebuild.” He was selected in a joint decision by the university and government officials.

On top of it all, the school paid a massive $200 million fine — roughly half of the federal grants that had been frozen, which the university was seeking to recoup in the negotiations.

“It seems,” Joseph Slaughter, an English and comparative literature professor and the director of the Institute for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia, told The Intercept, “they paid off an extortionist and they hope that the extortionists won’t come back.”"

Trump is demanding more and more as he gets away with more and more.

He’ll take gender firming care away while supposedly remedying antisemitism at the school.

And also, UCLA is a public university, which is different than others he has targeted like Harvard and Columbia, which are private.

Worried about research and universities in #Portugal being DOGE-d: the government just extinguished the country's main public #research and #science funding body, without consulting researchers at all, to merge it with an agency focused on "innovation". Looks like a way to move funding from public universities and basic research (already under-funded) to start-ups and "unicorns" coming up with dodgy apps. #politics #highered cnnportugal.iol.pt/fct/governo

👀 "[campus] leaders said they were hoping the multimillion-dollar settlement would buy them time.

“It backfired,” said one senior administrator at UCLA, reflecting the sense of whiplash felt among many who were interviewed. “Within hours of announcing our settlement, the DOJ was on our back.”"
