Brian Hawthorne
Gender identity, societal vs. personal:
My struggle with intersectionality

One difficulty I have with terms like “men” and “women” is that people have radically different conceptions of what those words mean, and those meanings have changed dramatically in the last 50 years. Growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, during a time when we openly talked about “liberation,” those terms were very broad, and we were trying to broaden them to include in “man”anyone who identified as a man, from Liberace to Joe Namath. Similarly for the gender term “woman.”
The concept of “man” that I learned as an adolescent and young adult included so much more than it does today. In those pre-intersectional days, with our goal of broadening genders to be free and all-inclusive, my spouse and I tried to raise our kids to be comfortable being whoever they were. We tried not to make assumptions about sexuality or gender.
When our eldest told us they were non-binary, I was so happy that they felt comfortable being whoever they are. But, it meant I finally had to dive into the world of intersectionality because words had changed so much.
So, while I still identify as a man, it is as a half-century-old, pre-Reagan, liberated man with a very different identity from what is portrayed by the media in our 21st century fascist hellscape as a “man.” In current intersectional terms, I would define myself as a queer, assigned male at birth, pansexual, and non-binary person with breasts.
Part of the reason that I enjoyed Marge Piercy’s Woman on the Edge of Time so much is because in the future/alternate reality of the book, they had taken the broadening step to its logical conclusion and eliminated the words man and woman, replacing them with the word person, and the universal pronoun “per.” My difficulty with intersectionality has always been that it divides instead of unifying, it focuses on the prison of ever more detailed gender roles rather than on the liberation of defining one’s own personal gender identity and throwing out the concept of gender-related roles in society entirely.
I understand the personal and political realities that make intersectional identities so important for marginalized and oppressed communities and individuals. But I still long for a world where we can all just be the people we are, instead of fitting our identities into ever-smaller boxes.

#gender #GenderQuestioning #genderIdentity #intersectionality

[ Edited to add: “with breasts.” I mean, we all have breasts, but most men are taught to ignore them as inconvenient bits of fat on top of over-developed pectoral muscles. I’ve recently become reacquainted with mine. ]

Allie (She/Her/Elle)
# Hadachek v. Oregon Intact Global 2025 Press Conference
Please let me know if you find more news coverage on this. We at the Genital Autonomy Collective spoke about intersectionality at the Intact Global 2025 press conference and hopefully some of the news will also mention that. The Hadacheck v. Oregon case will expand opportunities for trans, intersex, and gender diverse people in ways that more people need to be aware of. Circumcision impacts gender affirming surgery options, and impacts our freedom as well, and we're fighting with the broader genital autonomy movement for our shared rights.

An excerpt from my speech:
"Genital cutting is often talked about in the categories of male, female, and intersex, but those categories are not distinct in reality. People inherently defy those arbitrary boundaries. Because of this, many of the children assigned male at birth and subjected to penile circumcision, or other childhood genital cutting, are transgender, intersex, and otherwise gender-diverse
... Circumcision, by removing genital tissue and creating scars, physically limits options for adults seeking genital surgery. This stands in the way of our freedom to make the choice for ourselves as adults just like it does for boys and men. We are working with the intactivist movement for our shared freedom." https://www.youtube.com/live/S4-Cva6dVu4?si=uO4-J9OzUMfypDZD&t=5127

With attention and advocacy opportunities the challenge is bringing, The Genital Autonomy Collective is in need of more volunteers to help. Please message me if you're interested in supporting intersectional genital autonomy for all children in Oregon. While we welcome help of all kinds, we specifically need help with: Graphic design, web design, contacts with press, fundraising, social media management, writing, non profit experience, academic research opportunities, tabling events, etc.

Intact Global is also looking for Intersex plaintiffs who have experienced Intersex related genital cutting in Oregon at any date to add to the Equal Protection Challenge against forced, non-religious genital mutilation. As well as trans plaintiffs who have experienced penile circumcision in Oregon to add to the legal challenge.

Please email me at Allie@autonomycollective.org if you'd like to come forward as a plaintiff or are interested in volunteering. MikeDunnAuthor
Today, in honor of Black History Month, we remember Flo Kennedy, who was born on this date February 11, 1916, in Kansas City, Missouri. Kennedy was a lawyer, feminist and civil-rights activist. As a lawyer, she represented Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Assata Shakur, H. Rap Brown, and Valerie Solanas (for her attempted murder of Andy Warhol). In 1972 she formed the Feminist Party and filed an Internal Revenue Service complaint alleging that the Catholic Church violates tax-exempt requirements by spending money to influence political decisions. "I'm just a loud-mouthed middle-aged colored lady . . . & a lot of people think I'm crazy. Maybe you do too, but I never stop to wonder why I'm not like other people. The mystery to me is why more people aren't like me."

She grew up at a time when the KKK was quite active in Kansas City. She remembered her father had to have a shotgun to keep them safe. "My parents gave us a fantastic sense of security and worth. By the time the bigots got around to telling us that we were nobody, we already knew we were somebody." As a young woman, she moved to Harlem and enrolled at Columbia. She was refused admission to their law school because she “was a woman.” She knew it was because she was black. So, she threatened to sue them and they admitted her. She was the only black person among the eight women in her class.

As an activist, she once said, "we have a pathologically, institutionally racist, sexist, classist society. And that niggerizing techniques that are used don't only damage black people, but they also damage women, gay people, ex-prison inmates, prostitutes, children, old people, handicapped people, native Americans. And that if we can begin to analyze the pathology of oppression… we would learn a lot about how to deal with it." As early as 1966, she was picketing and lobbying the media over their portrayal of Black people. She played a prominent role in the protest against the 1968 Miss America Pageant. After the Attica prison uprising, she said, “We do not support Attica. We ARE Attica.” She also participated in the 1973 protests at Harvard over the lack of women’s bathrooms. When asked why she participated in the pouring of urine on the steps of Lower Hall, she said, “I'm just a loud-mouthed middle-aged colored lady with a fused spine and three feet of intestines missing and a lot of people think I'm crazy. Maybe you do too, but I never stop to wonder why I'm not like other people. The mystery to me is why more people aren't like me.

In addition to her activism and legal work, Kennedy also acted in the films “The Landlord” (1970), adapted from Kristin Hunter's 1966 novel, and the independent political drama “Born In Flames” (1983), directed by Lizzie Borden. She also acted in “Who Says I Can't Ride a Rainbow” alongside Morgan Freeman.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #flokennedy #racism #civilrights #feminism #charlieparker #BillieHolliday #HRapBrown #AssataShakur #columbia #harvard #intersectionality #lgtbtq #prison #harlem #attorney #kkk #racism #sexism #acting #film #blackhistorymonth #BlackMastadon
