Found some tiny wasps today, if I had to guess maybe this one is an aphid mummy wasp

Photo of a small wasp on the edge of a long flat leaf. The wasp has an orange abdomen, humped black thorax, long slender legs and antennae and big eyes. Its wings are folded flat on its back and a bit of iridescence is visible. The scale of the leaf makes it evident the wasp is very small.

A little fly methodically working his way through all the florets of a daisy. He took his time and was very thorough.

(I think he's a milichiid or "freeloader fly".)

We see a chunky little fly standing in the center of a daisy. The fly is black and has huge red eyes. His underside is dusted with grains of yellow pollen. We see him from the side. His brownish transparent wings are swept up and back, showing us the large calypters (transparent flaps that cover his halteres) underneath. He's carefully probing one of the daisy's yellow florets with his long, elephantish proboscis.

Perched in a tangle of brown root-like sticks (possibly part of a holdfast), an orange and brown hermit crab, naked, looks down on a collection of shells. Without a protective shell, her soft abdomen, coiled on the right side of her body, is a tempting treat for any passing crab. She must choose one of those shells below soon; there are 3 long, narrow mudsnail shells, striped in brown and white. (I don't think she cares about the colour, though.) There are several larger whelk shells, probably too big for her at this molt. She's about to touch the white shell in front with her antennae; maybe this will be the one she'll try on first.

An #InverteFest treat: found a pseudoscorpion today, and not in one of the places I usually look! It was under a piece of plank abandoned in undergrowth by the lake.

These strange, tiny, harmless arachnids live everywhere but Antarctica, but are rarely seen. Most people have probably never heard of them. They prey on even tinier creatures.

Moving back in time 518 million years for fossil sponge #InverteFest. I found this cool specimen of the "hand sponge" Sanshapentella in China royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/...

Layered pieces of broken dark colored shale, with the focal piece containing a fossil. The fossil looks like part of a crown, or a blob with at least two sharp points, and is orangey brown as it is pyrite. A person's finger is shown for scale, the fossil is several inches wide

I would never have seen this fellow if he hadn't moved. He's tiny and the color of the sand in this creekside sandbar.

We look down on a fuzzy little sand-colored scarab-shaped beetle on a background of sand. His large, coffee-colored antennae jut out and forward from his head, spreading into three paddles at their ends. The antennae remind us of reindeer antlers, and the whole fuzzy creature could be the insect analog of a shaggy reindeer.

For #Invertefest, this is a unique hand made cyanotype on watercolour paper (11” x 14”) with an image of grasses wildflowers with collaged lino block printed butterflies. The butterflies are both found here in Ontario: the yellow and black (with red and blue spots) Eastern tiger swallowtails (Papilio glaucus) and the orange, black and white Isabella’s Longwings (Nymphalidae Eueides isabella).

Believe it or not, I AM still working on the spider organs model. It's just slow going, because I have no idea what I'm doing. Basic idea seems to work, but need to make the nerves and silk glands bigger, and probably add more air-vents. Just doing the abdomen for now.
