New Read - Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 4

AAAAAAAAHHHHH!!

So much plot this volume. They find the red dragon, they free Falin, something is clearly up with her, we learn that the mad wizard who created the dungeon is probably an elf, and the last panel.

Oh my goodness. So well done.

Oh, and also, more monsters being eaten. Amazing!

Ready for the next volume.

New Read - Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 3

Fantastic volume. Met a kraken. Also, got more backstory on the party including a former member introduced. Which was fun.

Favorite moment - when they sewed giant poison frog hide together to help them get through some areas where there are poisonous flora.

That moment and screenshot. Looking great.

New Read - Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 2

Another great volume. More cooking while in a dungeon in a fantasy world. Plus some social commentary on racism in fantasy world settings...

Love to see it.

I don't know what else to say. It's keeping my attention this whole time.

New Manga Read - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Volume 11

The first half finished the tale of the battle to beat Macht of the Golden Lands and it's so well done. Denken gets a great chance to shine, so does Frieren. Also, Frieren gets to show how she's grown as a person in trusting her allies. It was so well done.

The second half was a string of short self-contained chapters with little stories. Frieren once again gets silly spells from locals she helps.

All in all, great volume!

New Read - Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 1

Okay, volume 1 sold me. It sold me hard.

Basic premise is that a band of fantasy adventurers get through a dungeon, only to be so hungry that they cannot fight against a red dragon and one of their compatriots is swallowed whole by the dragon.

So, after regrouping, they decide to go back. But, like they need to eat along the way.

Enter Senshi. Senshi helps teach them how to cook monster they find in the dungeons and it's so much fun.

Glad I picked this up. Looking forward to more.

New Manga Read - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Volume 10

Almost the entire volume is comprised of the memories of Macht of the Golden Land.

This flashback is SO well done. Incredible to fully understand Macht's backstory and how it overlapped with the region, with Denken, and with Frieren.

Flashing back to the present in the story and Macht with a friend from the past become a problem.

But that ending.

Such a well crafted volume, as always. Now I need to request the next volumes from my library!

New Read - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Volume 9

So good.

No, seriously, each volume is just so good.

Volume 9 brings back Denken into the plot. We meet near the Golden Land as Denken is trying to get Frieren's help to defeat the demon that has kept it gold. And the plot here, so well done. A lot of good flashbacks and the reveal of the demon's personal connection to Denken.

So good.

Can't wait to read the next volume.

Suite du fil

Through Volume 1, it's implied they have a mutual crush. Kind of. She's 24. He's 45.

I...I dunno. That feels weird. Too weird, to me. Too much of an age gap.

Also, his weird obsession with her when she's in cashier mode creeps me out. He specifically goes only to her aisle for check out even if the line is longer. That's explicitly said in the manga.

If a 45 year old dude kept doing that to a 24 year old woman IRL, how weird would that be?

Anyway, dropping after Volume 1. No thanks.

New Read - Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You, Volume 1

So, a lot of folks online have been reading this, apparently, so I saw Volume 1 at the library and picked it up. Also, a lot of folks I had followed on Insta (when I was there) gushed over this.

Premise: 45 year old business dude is kind of obsessed with a younger woman who checks him out at the grocery store. Another woman who works there (same woman, different hair style) asks to smoke with him. They chat outside while smoking together. He doesn't realize they're the same person.

New Read - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Volume 8

Volume 8 is a collection of shorter stories of Fern, Frieren, and Stark. Various encounters, well done flashbacks, solid fight scenes. Everyone holding their own.

But the final chapter showed Denken coming back into the story and, for that, I am thrilled.

Denken is back, guys!!

Sorry.

Anyway, loved it. Looking forward to Volume 9.

New Read - The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't a Guy At All, Volume 1

I have heard good things for a while, so picked up Volume 1 from the library. Short version: I enjoyed it.

Summary: Teenage girl has a crush a music store employee who she thought was a boy but, as it turns out, is a girl in her class. When they both figure it out, they wrestle with those feeling as the both kind of dig each other.

It's cute. A lot of references to American rock music. Also, very short chapters which makes it read similar to Wotakoi, if you read that one.

Overall, liked it.

New Read - Hi Score Girl, Volumes 8-10 (Final)

So, I finished Hi Score Girl this weekend.

The last three volumes flew by. They were so well done. So many fighting games. So much about these characters, Haruo and Oono, finally owning their feelings for each other.

At long last, they both know that it's love and the ending had me tearing up while reading it on the couch.

It's so cute. Glad I read the manga.

New Read - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Volume 7

End of the First Class Mage exam. I genuinely like how it ended and congrats to Denken and Fern. I hope we see Denken again someday.

The other part of the volume is some minor adventures and the importance of enjoying / experiencing life.

But, also Stark and Fern go on a date and it's so adorably awkward. So cute.

Anyways...yea, still loving it.

Volume 6

Volume 6 is the entirety of the next part of the First-Class Mage examination, as well as a beginning to the next part. The part after that, is brief and amazing, but I'll let you read it to find out. There's also flashbacks to a younger Frieren and the head of the entire magical program. Very well done.

The section in the cavern is great as you see how each of the mages from the previous volume deal with the conflicts of entering this unimaginable dungeon. Including a monster that can duplicate the powers of others.

Also, Frieren trapped in a mimic.

Volume 5

Volume 5 saw our magic wielders begin trials to become registered as a First-Class Mages.

We met a host of new, interesting characters. However, my favorite was Denken. He's an older, wiser, bearded man who, like Frieren, is in it not for the prestige or the authority, but largely for the love of magic and to return to see his hometown. I appreciate that. He also has a soft spot for younger mages, which I also appreciate. I feel this aspect will be on display as the trials progress.

Volume 4

Volume 4 largely contains the full tale of our party with Sein. Sein is a priest with divine magic whose friend disappeared years ago. Frieren sees herself in him, which gives us some great bonding moments between the two of them.

However, Sein is only with the party through this volume and leaves to continue on his way to find his lost friend.

Regardless, this volume had some great moments and also we see it help Frieren begin to pick up on more emotional aspects of her past friendships that she never did before.

Volume 3

Volume 3 has 3 parts. The first finished Frieren's battle with the demons from the previous volume. It is an intense battle of wits. The second is a journey north where they meet a priest and Frieren is encouraging them to join them. The third aspect, is a lot of flashbacks.

The flashbacks are some of the more interesting parts of this volume. We see when Frieren first learned magic, how she reduced her aura, and then used that ability for centuries to trick and defeat demons.

It was a well done volume and hard to put down.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Volumes 3 through 6

As my old #Pixelfed Instance is going down, I'm bringing some of my reviews and posts over from there to Mastodon.

First, here are the covers for Volumes 3 through 6 of Frieren.

Second, they were all VERY good.

Third, my favorite new character introduced in this set of volumes is Denken.

More thoughts in follow up toots.

New Manga Read - Primitive Boyfriend (Series)

I finished Primitive Boyfriend.

Premise: farm girl feels modern boys are too soft, wants to find her soul mate. Goddess of the harvest helps her by sending her to ancient men who are the previous incarnation of her modern soulmate.

In Volumes 1 & 2, Mito is an unlikable sexist who thinks all modern boys aren't manly enough. In Volume 3 she realized "Wait...people aren't 1 dimensional." And after her final whisking away to a previous time, she finally meets her modern day soul mate.

It's dumb popcorn romance, but easy to read.
