"A new bill to increase regulations on lithium mining in South Dakota failed to make it out of the state House on Thursday.
"House Bill 1258, proposed by Rep. Nichole Uhre-Balk, D-Rapid City, would have placed lithium mining under the same regulations as gold and silver rather than its current sand and gravel standards.
"Hard rock mining (gold and silver) is subject to stricter #WaterPollution control regulations than sand and gravel mining.
"Organizations like #MidwestLithium are currently exploring mining operations in the hills. Most lithium in the hills is found around the #HarneyPeak Granite formation, according to the organization's webpage.
"The South Dakota lithium project is comprised of roughly 23,500 acres of both #federal and private Land.
The House Agriculture and Natural Resources committee first split 6-6 on a do-pass motion Thursday before voting 8-4 to send the bill to the 41st day, killing it.
"''I think the general consensus is that the issue needs to be addressed, and so we'll continue to look harder at that, make sure we get all of our any concerns addressed and try to bring that bill back next year,' Uhre-Balk told the crowd at Saturday's crackerbarrel event hosted by Elevate Rapid City.
"Organizations like the local Indigenous led nonprofit #NDNCollective and the #BlackHillsCleanWaterAssociation spoke out in support of the bill Wednesday, stating that increased lithium mining threatens clean water for Black Hills residents especially since its treated like sand or gravel mining.
"Critics of the bill, such as Mike Lees, program administrator for the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources Minerals Mining Program, said current regulations are sufficient. At the crackerbarrel, Rep. Tim Goodwin, R-Rapid City, said the bill, 'was going to choke off mining. It was bureaucratic.'
"Uhre-Balk said the bill wouldn't stop mining.
"House Agriculture committee members cited a need to better understand the issue when voting to send it to the 41st day.
"The #SouthDakotaMineralIndustriesOrganization was not immediately available for comment."

OKEMAH, #Oklahoma --"Les Williston, #Choctaw, spoke on living life with honor, during the Convening of the Four Winds gathering at the Phillip Deere Round House on Sunday, hosted by the
#Mvskoke family of the international rights leader Phillip Deere.
"'Your ancestors are always around,' Williston said, speaking of the #SacredPlaces along the rivers. Williston is entrusted with bringing the Chahta ancestors home."

"Williston said that all along the rivers, like the #KiamachiRiver in southeastern Oklahoma, there are sacred places, places that are the heart of the people, places where the council was built.
"Speaking on bringing the ancestors home at the Phillip Deer Roundhouse on Muscogee Creek land, Williston was joined by Native people from throughout the nation during the two-day weekend gathering. They shared the history of the struggle for #NativeAmericanRights, the hard-won victories of the 1970s, and the ongoing struggles to protect the water and rivers -- as the #racism, threats of #EminentDomain seizures, the violence of #ManCamps of the #OilAndGas industry, the desecration of #LithiumMining in burial places, and the manipulations of the United States government continue.
With gratitude to the Native women gathered here, Williston said he appreciates the strength of the women speaking and their leadership, for it is a #matriarchal culture.
"'It is important that the women take the lead,' he said. 'I hear the wisdom come from these ladies.' 'We should always listen to the women, our clan mothers and clan sisters.'"

"The legacy of death from uranium mining already spreads across the Southwest. Scattered #radioactive tailings are spread across the #NavajoNation from #ColdWar #uranium mines, which the U.S. has not cleaned up. The dangerous processing mill in southeastern #Utah is now bringing in radioactive waste from Europe.
"The genocide continues -- from the genocide in #Palestine that the United States is producing weapons for, to the slow and toxic genocide in the Southwest -- where the U.S. allows uranium mining to continue.
"Nearby, lithium mining in Hualapai's Ceremonial Place has been halted.
Federal Judge Diane Humetewa, Hopi, granted a temporary restraining order this week and halted the Interior Department's permit for an Australian company, #HawkstoneEnergy aka #ArizonaLithium, to mine for lithium at Hualapai's Ceremonial Sacred Spring.
"Attorneys for the #BidenAdministration and Interior Sec. #DebHaaland told the federal court in Phoenix that the #LithiumMining at Hualapai's #CeremonialSpring was necessary for the 'transition to #GreenEnergy.'"

In January 2010 the #ObamaAdminstration approved a $54 billion taxpayer loan in a guarantee program for new nuclear reactor construction, three times what Bush previously promised in 2005. In April 2022, the #BidenAdministration government bailout to ‘rescue’ nuclear power plants at risk for closing. A #Colonial government representative stated, ‘US nuclear power contributes more than half of our #CarbonFree electricity, and President Biden is committed to keeping these plants active to reach our #CleanEnergy goals.’
“They, along with Climate Justice activiists, cite nuclear energy as necessary to combat #GlobalWarming, all while ignoring the devastating percent impacts #IndigenousPeoples have faced. There is nothing clean about energy produced from nuclear colonialism. From its weapons (including #DepletedUranium) to its #Mining and its waste; Indigenous bodies, lands, and waters continue to be sacrificed to heat water with radioactive materials which creates steam that moves generators to change batteries made from #Lithium extracted from other Indigenous sacred lands so #Teslas can mo you forward into a ‘just’ climate future.

So #LithiumBattery fires at #SolarFarms are a thing. And NOT a good thing (toxic releases when #Lithium burns). Considering that and all the pollution, water usage, environmental destruction and potential cultural genocide from #LithiumMining (since many places rich in lithium are where #Indigenous peoples live and worship), we should figure out lithium alternatives ASAP! Yes, we should go #solar, #wind, #tidal, #geothermal, etc., but only after considering ALL of hazards -- and not just give into #Greenwashing hype, which is all about making a buck and #Capitalism -- not real, sustainable, solutions!
