The Sherkin Island Fishing Boat

A fishing boat with the registration code C353P sits moored in the low-tide mud in Sherkin Island. It sits opposite the island library and has been a feature of the island for as long as I remember. However, it was missing during a visit in 2017, and this gallery of Sherkin Island photos shows an empty space where the boat should be! A blog post here from 2016 shows the boat back in place, so maybe someone took the boat out during my visit in 2017?

Now I would like to know more about this boat. Who owns it? Does anyone take it out for a spin any more?

You’ll also find photos of this boat elsewhere, including this article about a Ukrainian family who settled on the island. It’s also featured in a painting created in 2012, but it’s sitting on a dock somewhere, possibly local.

Natural colour, but a sepia monochrome view of Nightcliff Bay at dusk. The last of the sunlight is slanted almost horizontally across both the water and the exposed sand flat, showing ripples in water and sand alike, only she flat shine of water in pools showing where land is. A dull diagonal across the further side of the bay gives a hint as to where the water lies. Sprinkled across the flat are pioneering mangroves, isolated individual trees, or colonies of a few individuals, growing where no others have managed to take root. At high tide, many of these trees are completely submerged, but here they're visible, in sombre silhouette.

The bottom half of the frame has a predominately reddish tone with sand and pools of water from a receding tide. This is low tide in the place of the highest tides in the world, so this is actually the bay floor. At bottom left quarter is a single person, so far away it's very tiny, possibly digging for lugworms or some other fishing bait. There is a rock formation in the bottom right quarter, which would be mostly underwater at high tide. The upper part of the picture has a raised land mass on the left side, with a thick layer of fog that appears to be pouring over its edge into the water we see in the distance. Beyond that water is a low shoreline. The sky is very heavy with dark grey and blueish clouds broken with a pale sky near the horizon.
