kīpuka<p>Des articles fleurissent sur la découverte de roches « ressemblant à du corail » sur Mars, alimentant les fantasmes sur une éventuelle vie passée sur la planète rouge… Vu la teneur de certains papiers, on ne va pas tarder à glisser vers les envolées mensongères du style : « Du corail trouvé sur Mars !! » (si ce n’est déjà fait).<br> Il ne s’agit pourtant pas de corail, mais de formations rocheuses engendrées par la circulation d’une eau riche en minéraux dans un réseau de fractures. Quelques milliards d’années d’érosion par des vents chargés de sable ont fait disparaître la roche encaissante, laissant les minéraux déposés par les fluides. Un processus totalement abiotique, qui ne fait que confirmer la présence passée d’eau liquide sur Mars – ce qui n’est plus vraiment un scoop.<br> La NASA a une certaine responsabilité dans cette confusion, puisque l’agence a elle-même comparé ces roches à des coraux dans ses communiqués (ici <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/images/pia26633-curiosity-views-a-martian-rock-shaped-like-coral/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">jpl.nasa.gov/images/pia26633-c</span><span class="invisible">uriosity-views-a-martian-rock-shaped-like-coral/</span></a> et ici <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/images/pia26634-curiositys-chemcam-views-a-rock-shaped-like-coral/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">jpl.nasa.gov/images/pia26634-c</span><span class="invisible">uriositys-chemcam-views-a-rock-shaped-like-coral/</span></a>).
