@maggiejk It's happening in Florida as well... #subsidence is the culprit in both situations.

About 3 dozen high-rise buildings in South #Florida are sinking, a study finds

December 19, 2024

SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. — "Almost three dozen high-rise condos and luxury hotels along the beach in South Florida are sinking or settling in unexpected ways, in some cases because of nearby construction, according to a new study.

"The 35 buildings surveyed along an almost 12-mile stretch from #MiamiBeach to #SunnyIslesBeach have sunk or settled by 0.8 to 3.1 inches. About half of the buildings are less than a decade old, according to scientists at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science. The study was published Friday.

" 'The discovery of the extent of subsidence hotspots along the South Florida coastline was unexpected,' Farzaneh Aziz Zanjani, the lead author, said in a statement. 'The study underscores the need for ongoing monitoring and a deeper understanding of the long-term implications for these structures.' "

On Saturday, the organizers of Conexión #QueerTango Festival said they wanted to give the Filipeli twins a challenge this year. They danced with a third man, Leonardo Sardella.

For context, the twins took third place in the 2019 Tango World Championship, the highest two men have ever placed; trying to give them a challenge is justified!

In the first song that had all three, they danced as though jealously fighting over each other.

#MiamiBeach mayor’s censorship of ‘#NoOtherLand’ is yet another authoritarian move to shield Israel

Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner's call to strip a local movie theater's funding and lease over showing the film "No Other Land" is just the latest #authoritarian example of how the U.S. government is attempting to censor criticism of Israel.

By Nikki Morse and Donna Nevel, March 18, 2025

"Mayor Meiner has now introduced a resolution that, if passed, would revoke local art house movie theater O Cinema’s lease and withdraw more than $40,000 in city grant funding. The resolution is being introduced this week at the Miami Beach City Commission meeting for a vote. Opposition has been fierce, and it is coming from different perspectives. While all those opposing the resolution rightly describe it as anti-democratic, unconstitutional, and a violation of free speech, some of those same people are condemning the movie and even calling it antisemitic. At this moment, we believe that it is crucial for groups in #SouthFlorida fighting for #Palestinian justice to be able to say loudly and firmly that this censorship reflects the City’s anti-Palestinian climate and history that we have been resisting at every opportunity. "The mayor of Miami Beach is urging an art house theater in the city to cancel planned screenings of an Oscar-winning documentary about the ongoing conflict between Palestinians and Israelis in the West Bank that he calls ‘hateful propaganda.”

On March 5, Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner sent a strongly worded letter to O Cinema, an independent film cinema located in South Beach. He asks its CEO, Vivian Marthell, to remove the film “No Other Land,” which is scheduled to premiere Friday night at 7pm and has showings through next week.

But, despite pressure from Meiner, the South Beach theater has decided to move forward and run the film, which won an Academy Award early this week but has generated widespread criticism in Israel and from Jewish groups. The controversial film has secured only limited screenings in the United States despite its high-praise from film critics and viewers."
