Shockingly High Microplastic Levels Found On Remote Mediterranean Coral Reef Island

While studying a remote, coral-covered island in the #Mediterranean, scientists were shocked to discover that it has become riddled with some of the highest levels of #microplastic #pollution ever recorded in the region.

The discovery was made in the volcanic #BayOfIllaGrossa, located on the #Columbretes Islands marine reserve around 50 kilometers (31 miles) off the coast of #Spain in the Western Mediterranean Sea.

The area is particularly special as it’s home to Cladocora caespitosa, the only reef-forming stony #coral in the Mediterranean.

Drinks including #water, #soda, #beer #wine sold in #glass #bottles contain more #microplastics than those in #plastic bottles, according to surprising study released by #France #foodsafety agency Friday. The researchers found an average of around 100 #microplastic #particles per liter in #glass bottles of soft drinks, #lemonade, #icedtea and beer. That was five to 50 times higher than the rate detected in plastic bottles or #metal #cans. phys.org/news/2025-06-glass-bo #publichealth

`High concentrations of microplastics are found within ultra-processed foods, largely due to both the processing and packing process For example, foods like chicken nuggets contain 30 times more microplastics per gram than chicken breasts—highlighting the impact of industrial processing on the content of the food `

Ocean dumping - Sydney’s archaic sewerage system

"It is not just human waste that is being pumped into the ocean off Sydney’s popular beaches due to the city’s unusual and archaic sewerage system – government scientists have confirmed billions of microplastics are also polluting the water."

"Khan, who heads the school of engineering at the University of Sydney, said it was “not sustainable” to continue discharging “80% of the sewage produced by 5 million people into the ocean after only primary treatment”.
