DoomsdaysCW<p>From "Difference Between <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/OrganicGardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OrganicGardening</span></a> and <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Permaculture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Permaculture</span></a>" by April, published in 2018:</p><p>"Permaculture design has:</p><p> - Focus on closing the nutrient and water loop by using waste, and reducing the dependence on inputs.<br> - Creation of healthier soil and diversity of produce.<br> - Responsibility for waste. There is an aim to eliminate waste. i.e. no excess nitrogen nor weed seed, released.<br> - Variety keeps residents engaged and excited about growing their food.<br> - Imitating nature by conserving the soil and water, and genetic capital. There is an intensive use of space. Plants are allowed to set seed and are inter-planted for pest control. You are unlikely to see food plants in rows. The permaculture site will look more like a <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/FoodForest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FoodForest</span></a> with some open glades full of herbs and perennials.<br> - Optimisation of natural energies, e.g. wind, dust, leaves, bird droppings.<br> - Nutritious food and habitat for people AND native animals and birds.<br> - Dependence on observation. Permaculture design is a mixed technology. Bill Mollison (co-founder of permaculture movement) said that permaculture, like a bicycle, it is adaptable and has great potential but is only as good as the user.<br> - Minimal risk. If we fail at permaculture, nature simply takes over. The soil will continue to heal, the forests grow and someone else can step in to rebuild our efforts."</p><p>Read more:<br><a href="https://permaculturevisions.com/difference-between-organic-gardening-and-permaculture/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">permaculturevisions.com/differ</span><span class="invisible">ence-between-organic-gardening-and-permaculture/</span></a><br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/SolarPunkSunday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SolarPunkSunday</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Gardening</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NatureObservations" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NatureObservations</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NatureBasedLearning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NatureBasedLearning</span></a></p>

DoomsdaysCW<p>A blessed <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/WinterSolstice" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WinterSolstice</span></a> / <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Yule" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Yule</span></a> for all those who celebrate it. My morning was spent cleaning the bird trays, identifying "mystery tracks" in the snow (99% sure it was a Fisher Cat weasel looking for a drink), and then enjoyed watching many different colored birds having a feast! And yes, I love winter and snow. It's something I treasure and hope that will still happen (but who knows with Global Warming and Climate Change).<br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Maine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Maine</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/MaineBirds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MaineBirds</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Wildlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Wildlife</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NatureObservations" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NatureObservations</span></a></p>
DoomsdaysCW<p>I only sighted 6 <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Ladyslipper" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ladyslipper</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Orchids" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Orchids</span></a> in the usual spots. They've been dwindling down every year. I remember when the spot was full of them -- just a few years ago! I'm grateful the property owner is aware of them and does his best to protect them from plant poachers (which are a real thing). Ladyslippers don't transplant well, and they should just be left alone (and viewed form a distance -- I used a telephoto lens for this shot).<br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nature</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NatureHike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NatureHike</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NaturePhotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NaturePhotography</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NatureObservations" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NatureObservations</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LadySlipperOrchids" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LadySlipperOrchids</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/EndangeredSpecies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EndangeredSpecies</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nature</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Bloomsbury" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bloomsbury</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Bloomscrolling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bloomscrolling</span></a></p>
DoomsdaysCW<p>[Thread] This was my day today... A hike in a nearby forest and meadow, recording bird songs, and taking photos. Observations? Plenty for the bees to eat, but no bumblebees and barely any other bees. A couple of carpenter bees, a few small bees, but that was about all. I did capture some cool bird songs and used Merlin to identify them. So, mixed feelings about my hike. But it was still good to spend some time in nature -- even if my observations confirmed my misgivings about the local bee population.<br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nature</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NatureHike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NatureHike</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Maine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Maine</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NatureObservations" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NatureObservations</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/CitizenScientist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CitizenScientist</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/RachelCarson" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RachelCarson</span></a></p>
