Interesting move in #nixpkgs repo from #nixos . The template to request new packages has been removed, and it seems to be a sentiment to not encourage people to submit requests (use discourse instead).
I have opposite reactions, on one hand, I thought reporting missing packages helped everyone, like missing development libraries, on the other hand, I understand that such a massive repository can be a huge burden to maintain

OK after testing on a test Mastodon instance I think I am going to probably(90% chance) move to NixOS for my instance(esper.lol).
I do like the setup, centralized file, I can declare all the settings I want in one place and, I can easily move to a new server with this config FAST if need be.
Using social.spiritsandsuch.lol to test my setup, seems great so far. Automated backups, s3 storage, Declared Sidekiq processes, web, streaming, etc.
If I do move it will be on 4.4
Hey my #NixOS #Linux peeps. I have finally got a Flake based config that I can push from my central "build" VM to my test laptop. All is well, and things work. But I still dont know what the official method is for enabling non free stuff on Flakes. I want steam and a couple other things like that. Theres a bunch of conflicting stuff about it on the web. One thing that doesn't work is using nixpkg-nonfree because it doesn't track the latest stable release.

Doesn't matter how deeply they've embedded themselves: we have to get rid of these people. They cannot continue to have important positions. We cannot silently abide their presence.
I want your criticism. 
If there is one thing, Linux users have is an opinion. I have been working on a NixOS configuration that is meant to be new user-friendly, without being overwhelming, and if possible ADHD-friendly too. Ideally, I think it is screen reader friendly as well. The goal was to be inclusive.
On that note, I wanted a configuration that would work for "most" people. Meaning, I use this, and I'm done.

Like how about this:
A Nix flake is a file named flake.nix in the top level of a directory which contains a single attribute set with three keys "description" "inputs" and "outputs".
the "inputs" is a .... (what? what is it?)
the outputs is a function definition taking an attribute set that has the following attributes...
now... go... fill in the missing bits. What is in "inputs" and what does "outputs" take as input and return?
Help #Linux peeps.. What are some clean #gtk easy to use software centers that are available in #nixos and integrate with #flatpak .
I'm currently using gnome-software in my nixbook project (that runs cinnamon desktop) and it's pissing me off with system level notifications I can't seem to silence.

NatureToward practical transparent verifiable and long-term reproducible research using Guix - Scientific DataReproducibility crisis urge scientists to promote transparency which allows peers to draw same conclusions after performing identical steps from hypothesis to results. Growing resources are developed to open the access to methods, data and source codes. Still, the computational environment, an interface between data and source code running analyses, is not addressed. Environments are usually described with software and library names associated with version labels or provided as an opaque container image. This is not enough to describe the complexity of the dependencies on which they rely to operate on. We describe this issue and illustrate how open tools like Guix can be used by any scientist to share their environment and allow peers to reproduce it. Some steps of research might not be fully reproducible, but at least, transparency for computation is technically addressable. These tools should be considered by scientists willing to promote transparency and open science.
Been screwing around with Nixos today and holy crap, this is the fastest I have ever setup a Mastodon instance.
Added everything in as described on the wiki and BOOM! The instance came up and I could create an account.
I still know NOTHING about Nixos other than some YouTube knowledge but I kinda feel like this can replace Ubuntu for my servers that I run.
Also... I DIDN'T KNOW CHANING THE FAVICON WAS BUILT INTO MASTODON NOW. I have just updated the esper.lol one.
