James Brown<p>Someone just (well, two hours ago) kicked in the back door of my neighbor's house in <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/oakland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>oakland</span></a> and burglarized them. Seems like the burglars did some prep work and carefully avoided any of the places where my or my neighbor's cameras could see anything. As usual, no sign (or expectation) of OPD showing up or doing anything -- $375M/year ($852/year/resident, only 50% more per capita than peer cities like Boston) doesn't buy you a police department that actually responds to calls.</p><p>I recognize that, statistically, Oakland isn't a particularly high-crime city, but it's still scary when it's next door.</p>
