For #ThickTrunkTuesday, I have a symbol of resilience for you: an #oak #tree, that is still going strong despite a massive #canker. The tree may be from the late 1500s when the #park was founded as a hunting area and breeding/research compound, today it's next to the moose enclosure of #SababurgZoo.
The tree has a height of around 27 metres and a circumference of more than 6,6 metres (below the canker). The hollow #trunk houses a hornets' nest and visitors are asked to be cautious. As you can imagine, it's a popular photo spot.

Council plans legal action over ancient London oak felled by Toby Carvery. To show support for the residents of Enfield, who have been the victims of an appalling act of corporate vandalism. we should all boycott all of Mitchells and Butlers brands. #MitchellsandButlers #Enfield #oaktree #woodlandtrust theguardian.com/environment/20

Rockville Reflections

Rockville Regional Park is one of my regular hiking destinations near home.
The park has a range of trails from easy to difficult.
Near the end of summer this little pond can dry up into basically large mud puddle. I captured this on a beautiful spring day where the wind was completely absent. The pond reflected as almost a perfect mirror.

Frosty

This image was captured right after a decent snow storm came through Yosemite Valley.
This beautiful snow covered tree stood out against the muted evergreens behind them.
The snow was unbroken and presents a beautiful white carpet leading back to the tree.
The oak, with it's broad branches seemed to have captured more snow than those around it.

Good morning. 🌳🌳🌳

1 April 2025

I just returned from Moon Base Alpha this morning. This secret Space Force facility, located on the far side of the moon, was originally established by the German Luftwaffe in 1943 with extraterrestrial assistance. In 1945, the American Air Force covertly took control of the base. Renowned scientist and engineer Wernher von Braun played a crucial role by providing vital information that enabled the USAF to secure the base swiftly. With the creation of the Space Force as a new branch of the armed forces, management of the base naturally transitioned to them. The existence of Moon Base Alpha was recently disclosed to the public via The History Channel. Ah, and remember—on a day like this, not everything is as it seems. Happy April Fools'!

The Skipinnish Tree

A 400yr-old sessile oak hiding in a sitka spruce plantation in Lochaber, Argyll and voted Woodland Trust Tree of the Year 2024.

I'd seen videos and photos of this great tree and figured had a pretty clear idea how I wanted to shoot it myself - good thing I found it while it was still daylight as it's just a bit spooky... :)

“Autumn Black Oak Trees” — Autumn black oak trees in a Yosemite Valley meadow.

When we think of fall colors, most often trees like maples or (in the West) aspens come to mind, not oak trees. But in the right light the black oaks of Yosemite Valley can put on quite an autumn color show. While the leaves tend more toward brown than yellow, when backlit they glow and the yellow tones predominate. I photographed these trees in soft backlight, and the color shift is clear…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2024/11/17/au

This white oak is the first one I planted. I got it from the park district as well 5 or 6 years ago. It is now about 5' (1.5m) tall. The pumpkins are from our porch. The squirrels were having so much fun I put them here for them to nosh on. Maybe next year we'll grow pumpkins from the spilled seeds!
