Yesterday, we wrapped up another successful edition of our course Bibliometric Data Sources and Indicators at CWTS, @universiteitleiden University.
It was a great week of discussions on bibliometric indicators, open research information, new data sources like #OpenAlex, #preprinting, and the challenges of transparent #ResearchAssessment.
Thank you to all participants for their active engagement and to our lecturers Clara Calero Medina, @vtraag Traag and @LudoWaltman!
The fruits of following my curiosity yesterday - a little Sunday Study on citations.

Motivated by @sundogplanets 's post on citing old papers: https://mastodon.social/@sundogplanets/114677909402696290
I haven't checked, because I wanted to do it anyway, but I'm sure someone out there has done this more thoroughly and properly.
"OpenAlex had the best coverage (98.6%), followed by Semantic Scholar (98.3%), Embase (96.8%), and PubMed (93.0%). However, 90.5% of all articles were retrievable from all four databases. All articles that were not retrievable from OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar were either assessed as medium or high RoB. In contrast, both Embase and PubMed missed articles that were of high quality (low RoB)"

Are you working with #metadata on research output and actively use open platforms as #OpenAlex, @OpenAIRE, @crossref or @ORCID_Org? Then don't miss the first workshop of #SOAD, the Swiss Open Academic Data community at @ethzurich.bsky.social in September!
#CallforContributions is now open:

Last year, we found that @OpenAlex was mistakenly marking some papers as retracted—misleading researchers. We @hauschke reported the issue, posted a preprint in March 2024, and… #OpenAlex fixed it almost instantly!

Meanwhile, our peer-reviewed paper on this? Published today - over a year later. See the difference? Preprints matter. Open science works.
You should get in touch with @kfitz
They even have their own instance and are interacting with #bonfire folks.
OK, my list is now
#Zenodo (in use, but I didn't see its potential )
#OpenAlex (in me use )
#kcworks (ready to discover this week )
#Bonfire (waiting for it )
#europepmc (will use it more )
#ORCiD (my appologies, I undervalued you)
New #preprint - Can #OpenAlex compete with #Scopus in bibliometric analysis?

@OpenAlex has broader coverage and shows higher correlation with certain expert assessments.
At the same time, it has issues with metadata completeness and document classification.
Most intriguingly: it turns out that raw #citation counts perform just as well, and in some cases even better, than normalized indicators, which have long been considered the standard in #scientometrics.
@brembs @neuralreckoning @thetransmitter That's why I hope that #OpenAlex will be gaining in importance.
A pity that OpenAlex has not been discussed in the article

New Video Recording: "DOAJ & #OpenAlex Collaborations for Improved Open Science" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YeG5YyJhcU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YeG5YyJhcU @DOAJ #openscience

On 20th February at 17:00 UTC, @OpenAlex and #DOAJ will give a joint webinar on our collaboration and how we help quality #openaccess journals achieve greater visibility and impact.

"#OpenAlex: what is it and how do we use it?" https://osl.hypotheses.org/15701
Is there an analog for #researchgate in the #Fediverse?
In a way, https://bookwyrm.social/ comes close to this. Bibliometric information like the number of citations might be taken from different sources like #openalex and #wikidata.
Just discovered #openalex : the #openscience alternative to web of science etc. Calling it that is doing it a disservice, so check for yourself how awesome it is.
If there is a will, there is a way.
What #openalex has achieved during last year has all my respect. And it should have yours if you care about #OpenData and #openscience
