The simplest way to contribute to an open source project as a user is to respond to usage surveys. Those give important insights to the community on how the software they build is being used, and informs future development decisions.

The #OpenStack 2025 User Survey is closing on August 29. If you run an @OpenStack deployment, please take the time to describe or update its status!

Skype will shut down soon. I wanted an open source alternative so I tried Galene (galene.org/) multiple times to call my dad and it works very well.

For now, I spawn a disposable instance on OVHcloud using OpenTofu and the OpenStack provider. Then I configure the software using Ansible. The code is available here git.riou.xyz/jriou/galene-clou.

Tomorrow, I would like to only host a TURN server on my VPS and self-host galene on my homelab.

>> 1. I don't want to use Google Android or Apple iOS. There is no first class client for Linux/#Debian/#Mobian.

Build one.

>> 2. I don't want to fuel the Amazon cloud of Jeff B., but prefer services in my home "country", the #EU.

Use #OpenStack or ask an EU provider to use it.

>> 3. I don't want to use a phone number for creating an account. E.g. it makes multi-account setups hard.

🔥 👍

>> …grey beard, but I'll stay with #Jabber 🙂

How about #Mastodon? 😉

My team is hiring a Software Quality Engineer! We do #OpenShift on #OpenStack so if you think you might have any relevant or just translatable skills check us out:

redhat.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/J

Our team is fully remote, currently spread across Europe and the Americas. I'm not too familiar with the HR stuff, but the job is listed as 'Remote Czech Republic'. At risk of getting myself in trouble my personal, poorly informed, non-legally-binding understanding of that is:

* You never have to go to the office
* The available salary range is based on the Czech market
* They'd probably prefer that you were also in the Czech Republic, but it's absolutely worth a conversation if you're not. Seriously: apply first, paperwork later.

We have a big office in Brno, btw, so if you really wanted to work from the office nobody would stop you.
