I just attended a brilliant presentation by @cyberlyra at day 1 of #fedicon in Vancouver. She shared this site which is well worth a look https://www.reclaimcontrol.tech/

Nice try LinkedIn. No, I’d rather not upload a photo of ANY PII and/or scan my face to you or your third-parties so you can misuse it. Your platform is not that important.
How can we design for easier attendee participation? By modeling participation, creating a safe event environment, and making participation optional.
My colleague Alex Rosenblat has been doing her own #optout experiments for many years, from data sharing in US healthcare. It's hard for you to get clarity on access but not for data brokers...

So Naomi Brockwell TV blew my mind about how are smart TVs are spying on us with Automatic Content Recognition and other advertising profile scripts. Yikes!

I don’t have the resources to switch to a more secure streaming device yet (I’m gonna build one with mini PC running LibreELEC with Kodi hopefully).
In the meantime, I setup a Pi-Hole on an old Raspberry Pi 3B I had laying around last night to block as many ads and outgoing unwanted scripts as I could.

It is working great from what I tell! Even removed the ads from my Roku TV home pages lol! I’m sure some stuff is getting through, but at least it’s minimal.
Here is the PiHole install video I watched from Micro Center, but I also added SSH via private/public keys too. How to Block Ads Using a Pi-Hole With A Raspberry Pi

Finally got through the process of downloading my old Facebook and couple of Instagram accounts data today. Pretty extensive! Had wait several days on Facebook alone.
Just clicked to confirm deletion of ALL my Meta accounts and couldn't be happier!
I have also mostly finished moving all +200 online accounts using my various gmail and outlook emails over to Proton Mail aliases! Coming for you next Google and Microsoft, so watch out!
It's hard work, but take back your data, privacy, and peace of mind from these big tech companies that profit from your doomscrolling and selling your data!
Thanks to all the folks on here, Reddit, and YouTube that have given insight, especially @techlore. Thank you!
It's not about privacy. It's about democracy.

A gentle note that you don't have to do the 21 day #cybercleanse consecutively... Try it one day a week, or one day a month. You can #degoogle yourself and get off the other toxic Big Tech sites and systems with intention, swapping deprivation for empowerment, one tool and one habit at a time.

You escaped corporate social media and found community here. Who else will you help find their freedom?
This #july4th #stopthescroll to #reclaimcontrol over our data and devices! Resist the urge to log in, take a day out to reflect, and try something new to shift your habits toward alternatives!
So many reasons to #optout of #bigtech -- what's yours?
PS If you've already disconnected, boost and help a friend! Many are longing for change but don't know where to start ...
@ScottMGS @WeirdWriter So happy to hear it! Keep us all posted on your progress and your choices. I'd love to know what works for you and what doesn't -- and how we can help more people #optout and #reclaimtech

In the age of facial recognition and age verification, it might feel like our data is being harvested left and right, completely outside our control or consent. Yet, we still have a powerful weapon to fight back against surveillance: The power to say no.

by me:
Sometimes, it can feel like our data is being harvested left and right, completely outside of our control or consent.
Yet, we still have a powerful weapon to fight back against surveillance:
The power to say NO.
Saying no is how we stand a fighting chance against the normalization of mass surveillance.
We must exercise this right every time we possibly can.

How to opt-out from Netflix sharing your data with third party advertisers:
- do this on the phone app or website rather than on your TV e.g. thru Roku
- right below the setting they mention, there's an Opt-out of All option that seems to take care of the other profiles on your account; but you should check them anyway
- Kids profiles don't seem to have the setting
