This is getting worse by the minute. I followed @christof|s hint concerning the reproduction of articles from #DHQ / @DHQuarterly looking for one of my own papers (digitalhumanities.org/dhq/vol/).

In this case #ProQuest blatantly violates the CC BY-ND license (creativecommons.org/licenses/b) by

- not mentioning the license
- producing a derivative
- not linking to the original

I am very much in favour of @adho.org, as the publisher of @DHQuarterly, following the path outlined by @dingemansemark. I will also log a complaint with #ProQuest through my employer.

After reading through the CC BY license I am none the wiser whether one has to clearly indicate that the material in question had been originally published somewhere else. The DOI as provided by #ProQuest reveals this fact but only after manually parsing the string with a resolver. Readers unfamiliar with the Programming Historian are made to believe that ProQuest is the original publisher or the platform officially hosting the original content.

However, ProQuest clearly violates the attribution requirements by modifying the layout and removing images. The CC BY license explicitly states that “You must […] indicate if You modified the Licensed Material”.

This is the norm, not an exception.
Received, reviewers invited (probably peer-review mills), editor contacts authors, authors revise their work, reviewers look at revision, editor makes decision, publication... all within a single month (that includes New Year's Eve).

Last year, Scopus blitzed all links to journal websites from their profiles in a clumsy reaction to their data being infiltrated by journal hijackers, i.e., fraudsters who pose as a real journal.

Did it work? No. They're still indexing hijacked content, notes Anna Abalkina on Retraction Watch.

My journal was hijacked: an editor’s experience

👉 "The source of the problems in all cases was #Scopus, which linked to the fraudulent website (sjisscandinavian-iris.com/inde) instead of the real one (aisel.aisnet.org/sjis/). Searching for indexed #journals, victims were led straight to the fraudsters.

The fake website also appeared in online searches. Both #Google and #Bing included it among their top results."
