If you are interested in presenting your work at RSAA25 in 17–19 September, remember we’ve extended the Call for Presentations to 22 June and the Accessibility Fellow applications close Thursday the 19th of June.
It’s a great opportunity to present your work in research software, remotely and at low cost, all in an Asian/Australian-friendly timezone.
The conference runs entirely online, across three half-days in the afternoons (Melbourne time). There’ll be talks, workshops, and a dedicated community-focused third day.
The maximum registration fee is $30 AUD, but lots of free tickets will be available to keep things accessible. Would love to see you there or feel free to pass it on to others who might be interested!
The RSAA25 Accessibility Fellowship aims to encourage individuals with disabilities - such as those who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, have low vision, or have other disabilities - from within our community or adjacent communities to join RSAA25. Their involvement will help ensure we are held accountable for the accessibility of this online event.
RSAA25 Call for Presentations – Deadline Extended to 22 June
Due to popular demand, and to give everyone a little extra time to prepare and submit your ideas, the deadline for the Research Software Asia Australia Conference 2025 (RSAA25) Call for Presentations has been extended to 22 June 2025. We warmly invite you to take advantage of this opportunity to contribute your insights and innovations in research software.

RSAA25 is open to all career stages and domains, including science, humanities, infrastructure, and community-led work. Presenters do not need to identify as “RSEs” to participate, if your work involves research software, you’re welcome!
Research software is increasingly recognised as a core research output, alongside publications and datasets.
Across OECD countries, targeted reforms are supporting its development, openness, and long-term sustainability. As AI-driven research grows, a robust research software ecosystem — supported by skilled individuals, strong communities, and reliable infrastructure — is more important than ever.
Following last year’s pledge by OECD members and partner countries to advance open science through improved data management and stewardship, the OECD’s Committee for Scientific and Technological Policy (CSTP) is launching a 2025–26 project to assess progress and policy gaps in access to research software.
A key milestone will be the expert workshop:
Access to Research Software: Opportunities and Challenges
taking place on 8 September 2025 at the OECD headquarters in Paris.
Discussions will focus on governance, skills, infrastructure, sustainability, and public–private collaboration.
To participate or contribute, please contact alan.paic@oecd.org
Dr Minh Bui, co-developer of the globally-used phylogenetics software IQ-TREE2 and winner of the inaugural ARDC Eureka Prize for Excellence in Research Software, will be delivering the #RSAA25 keynote!
Together with Professor Robert Lanfear (Australian National University), Dr Bui developed IQ-TREE2 – an open-source tool turning DNA data into evolutionary insights. It has been used to study everything from the origins of life to the spread of COVID-19.

Given that the #RSE collaboration workshop was this week I was reflecting on the conferences I've been able to attend and present at this year, and how I'm adapting.
Now one of the challenges is cost and the fact that I can't travel easily and that I'm in the Asian time zone.
So now we're looking for remote conferences, that are low cost and that are run at a decent time for me.

Oh! There are more than 20!
@KirstieJane #Collabw25 list continues
21. Respected.
22. Zeitgeist - the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era. Don't let AI be zeitgeist, it's our work.
23. You. you are the future
The future of #ResearchSoftware is Visionary, Kind and Joyful!
20 things that #ResearchSoftware has to be by @KirstieJane
1. Trustworthy
2. Human. It's about the people
3. Sovereign. Jupyter's example, one of their values: the community right to replicate
4. Preserved.
5. Maintained. E.g., @scientific_python promoting communication across the python ecosystem
6. Networked.
7. Interoperable. SPEC recommendations from @scientific_python
8. Continuous. Like nightly wheels (#SPEC4)
9. Lean. Removing code is good!
10. Governed. @turingway
I know many researchers don't get to choose their operating system
and, regardless, installing an operating system is something most people never do,
but truly one of the biggest barriers I confront in helping people use or write #ResearchSoftware is Windows itself.
We’re excited to announce the 𝗥𝗦𝗔𝗔𝟮𝟱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.
This initiative is designed to encourage individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, have low vision, or have other disabilities to join us as we prepare for RSAA25 - helping to ensure our online event is as accessible and inclusive as possible.
Given that some members of our organising committee are blind or have low vision, we will prioritise applicants who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have other types of disabilities, to help bring even greater diversity of experience to our accessibility work.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗦𝗔𝗔𝟮𝟱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹:
- Attend RSAA25 with a free ticket
- Share their insights by posting during #RSAA25 on Mastodon (if they wish)
- Create a short, open-access blog or report after the event
The successful fellow will receive an initial payment before the event and a final payment once the report is published.
Deadline for applications is 2am UTC Thursday the 12th June 2025
Results of the application will be provided on the 27th of June 2025
You can find the RSAA25 Accessibility form here.
