🔮 The Great Illusion: When We Believed BeOS Would Save the World (And Maybe It Was Right) – Desktop On Fire!

「 Imagine: instead of OS X based on NeXTSTEP, we would have had an Apple system based on BeOS. No decades-old Unix cruft, no Mach kernel heavy as an elephant, but an operating system born for multimedia, elegant as a Lamborghini and fast as… well, as a Lamborghini 」

I have a large collection of #electronic and #computer #music #vinyl #records. I had a radio show on FM on the subject for about a decade. So it is always exciting to find something I don't have, especially early stuff. Found this 10" boxed "Music from Mathematics" from 1960, bell labs. Much more rare than 1962 Decca 12". Never seen it before. Found in a local shop, of all places, hiding inside a vinyl carry case.

Wired Italia · Zx Spectrum, arriva il remake di terza generazione dello SpeccyPar Jader Liberatore

Here's the article I was working on today, and the first I've written for The Register in a hot minute: a look at a new, generated-from-actual-1980s-hardware, 1.5-million-strong test suite for the Intel 286 and compatibles.

In 2025. Yes. Emulator devs are a different breed, I tell you, and we're all the richer for 'em.

OK folks, I have a Commodore 64 question.

I am recording footage of the Great Giana Sisters and I noticed visual artifacting on my NTSC Commodore 64 during scrolling.

Naturally I fired it up in VICE, and it's doing the same thing. So I don't think it's a hardware bug with my particular C64.

Is this a known bug with the game on NTSC systems? I mostly see PAL versions in gameplay videos and they don't suffer this flaw- it's possible I never noticed it until now?

My gamble on StyleWriters arrived!
Instead of two pricey working ones,
I got two cheaper, quirky machines.

Still need the SW2 driver.
The SW1500 struggles with paper,
and the cartridge lock needs care.

Not perfect—but full of potential.
Happy to have them in the studio.

I've a "old #astronomy software" side project and I'm looking for the early Mac software "StarMap" or "Star Map" from Bruce Webster.

So far my searches came up empty, but I'm not a specialist in old Mac software.

Does anyone have a copy of this app?

It's described in detail in a July 1985 BYTE article: archive.org/details/BYTE_Vol_1

It would come as no surprise that inside is just a computer. A 286 in this case. There’s a backplane with 4 cards.
1) the 286 SBC
2) a video card
3) not sure, maybe a board full of EPROMs that the computer boots from
4) not sure, maybe a serial card
The CRT is wonderfully sharp, and the AG coating is a nice touch of realism to what the actual unit would have looked like.
