Farmers and DAERA have been told for many years that there’s too much slurry going on the land; that it’s polluting rivers and causing problems. Yet, here they are, trying to disclaim responsibility and whining they haven’t been sufficiently educated. The previous DAERA minister was a farmer - Edwin Poots DUP MLA, and he actually reduce the derisory fines for pollution, for repeat offending farmers. Talking to local councillors about the overwhelming pig factory farm odours would get you a response of ‘bit of grand country air, never did any harm’. There’s ignorance, and there’s deliberate, wilful, ignorance…
People like Kevin Sharkey, singer, have taken part in lots of media and education to try and highlight the damage, and this is the farming response.
