Tyler Smith<p>Sitting at the cottage with my ereader, and I recall I have an early draft of <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/TeachingTechTogether" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TeachingTechTogether</span></a> by <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@gvwilson" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>gvwilson</span></a></span> on it. Purchased the final/latest release and dove in.</p><p>Such an amazing, inspiring resource! Maybe even better than the <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/SoftwareCarpentry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SoftwareCarpentry</span></a> lessons it grew out of. Making me scheme about how to do more teaching when I get back to the lab later this month.</p><p>Protip: you can read it for free online, but if you want the 'published' epub, you can get it direct from Kobo. You don't need to suffer the terrible VitalSource format offered by the publisher.</p><p><a href="https://teachtogether.tech/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">teachtogether.tech/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
mhagdorn<p>new blog post about our first <a href="https://toot.berlin/tags/SoftwareCarpentry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SoftwareCarpentry</span></a> at the Charité Universität Medizin, <a href="https://toot.berlin/tags/Berlin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Berlin</span></a>. It was great fun. So good to be able run an in-person workshop after two years of online workshops during the pandemic. Plenty of ideas for the next session.</p><p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@thecarpentries" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>thecarpentries</span></a></span> </p><p><a href="https://magi.marsupium.org/2023/06/software-carpentry-charite.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">magi.marsupium.org/2023/06/sof</span><span class="invisible">tware-carpentry-charite.html</span></a></p>
Ethan White<p>So, Trevor Price &amp; I started building the <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SoftwareCarpentry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SoftwareCarpentry</span></a> Windows Installer. It started out as a Python script. You had to get Python working and then you ran this script and it took care of some of the additional complexities. This is as close as I can get to the original script:</p><p><a href="https://github.com/swcarpentry/windows-installer/commit/95f7b2e732454bd44a7004bd99d731dfe2ff3e95" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/swcarpentry/windows</span><span class="invisible">-installer/commit/95f7b2e732454bd44a7004bd99d731dfe2ff3e95</span></a></p><p>We kept adding more fixes (&amp; fixing things that broke; which happened a lot) &amp; eventually packaged it all as a proper Windows installer to make things easier for students.</p>
Ethan White<p>Wow, the removal of <span class="h-card"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@thecarpentries" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>thecarpentries</span></a></span> windows-maintainers team really takes me back.</p><p>When <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SoftwareCarpentry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SoftwareCarpentry</span></a> started teaching workshops in ~2012 installation for Windows users was a nightmare. We would often spend the first 1+ hours of a workshop desperately scrambling to fix bash/Python install issues on Windows.</p><p>So, a tiny group of us starting trying to make that experience better. 🧵</p>
Paul Griffiths<p>Day 1 of the <a href="https://atmoschem.org/tags/softwarecarpentry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>softwarecarpentry</span></a> lesson on “Intermediate Research Software Development”course is underway at U of Manchester - after some useful time setting up and introducing ourselves! Ben Companjen 🟥<p>The Carpentries are looking for more Maintainers, who look after the lesson materials that are used in <a href="https://code4lib.social/tags/SoftwareCarpentry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SoftwareCarpentry</span></a>, <a href="https://code4lib.social/tags/DataCarpentry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DataCarpentry</span></a> and <a href="https://code4lib.social/tags/LibraryCarpentry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LibraryCarpentry</span></a> workshops. Nathaniel D. Porter<p>It's a little intimidating to come off holiday and immediately teach multi-day workshops but I always look forward to our <span class="h-card"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@thecarpentries" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>thecarpentries</span></a></span> <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/softwareCarpentry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>softwareCarpentry</span></a> workshops at <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/VirginiaTech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VirginiaTech</span></a> because I love seeing people discover they can code or use version control, even if they've never done anything like it in the past! Currently in the middle of the second of two workshops for January.</p>
