Well I decided to give it a shot! Enjoy! The Iron Sysadmin News Recap! (im not married to this title..)
Netcat, often called the “TCP/IP Swiss Army Knife,” is more than a simple utility. It can open raw sockets, transfer files, act as a backdoor, or even serve as a quick chat server between machines. Many sysadmins used it for debugging, while hackers saw it as an easy way to pivot or establish command shells. With just a few commands, you could set up a listener on one side and instantly connect from another, making it feel almost magical in its simplicity. Even decades later, its versatility and lightweight design keep it relevant for both troubleshooting and exploitation.
Just published a comprehensive FreeBSD Cheat Sheet for Linux Admins!
Covers all the essentials:
- Hardware info (pciconf → lspci)
- Network commands (sockstat is amazing!)
- Disk management & ZFS operations
- Service management differences
- Package management across systems
Perfect for Linux admins diving into FreeBSD or anyone working across both systems. Includes 100+ command comparisons and real-world examples.

Moved a customer from AWS to a rented bare-metal server, from Elastic Beanstalk to FreeBSD+ZFS+Jails, from S3 to Minio.
Somehow now they're paying 1/3 the price and got 4x better performance.
Imagine if they were on-premis for the same yearly price.
I have a #PCEngines APU4 machine with an external m.2 in a USB encase. It used to boot from it, but not anymore. I used to use a USB stick to boot with some #GRUB + #Linux + initrd ISO image, but can't remember which.
Tried several ISOs (gparted, grml, debian installer, others). Many are not even detected by the (#UEFI less) SeaBIOS 1.12.0.1 (see pic), and the few that do can't be told to boot from another disk.
Need to find or create a BIOS bootable disk, docs and help appreciated.
potentially shouting into the void here but: does anyone on mastodon successfully use Jamf to manage Windows devices and feels comfortable doing so? plans to change MDM software have stalled due to InTune being *much* more tied into 365 adoption than I originally expected and ain’t nobody got time for that #mdm #askfedi #sysadmin #jamf #halp
New server, new #introduction.
