At the beginning of this week's Clinical update with Dr. Daniel Griffin, he briefly discusses the #H5N1 case in BC where the teen first began with conjunctivitis and progressed to critical condition days later. He mentions the sequence being related to strains circulating in birds and not the cow-adapted strain. At the same time, the cow-adapted virus, which has infected quite a few dairy workers with mild disease (recent small serological studies indicate about 7% of dairy workers with about half of them reporting any symptoms) was shown lethal in ferrets, but as Prof. Racianiello notes, ferrets aren't people. Clearly, H5N1 bears watching even more now that it has gone from wild birds to so many mammals, but so far it still is not transmitting much among humans. #TWiV #HPAI
