"</p><p>except that stablecoins are different - they are literally (theoretically) backed by dollars. you can take your USDC to the Circle window at any time and they will wire USD to your bank account. i used to know the exact number but IIRC hundreds of millions of dollars a day worth of USDC are redeemed by tens of thousands of people in an automated system (you just send your USDC to a particular address on chain and USD is wired to your bank account).</p><p>it doesn't work that way for <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Tether" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tether</span></a>. only a small list of ~200 people is allowed to redeem their <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/USDT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USDT</span></a> for USD, you can't redeem any amount less than $100,000, and Tether's customers almost never redeem, which makes one wonder whether it's really redeemable.</p>

Circle CFO is on video saying that Tether is a counterfeiting operation.</p><p>(fun fact: Circle USDC was the largest depositor at <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/SiliconValleyBank" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SiliconValleyBank</span></a> and if SVB had been allowed to collapse and $3.2bn worth of USDC had died with it the entire crypto industry would have gone kaput.</p><p><a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/moralhazard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>moralhazard</span></a></p>
