Serious water pollution incidents up 60% in #England, Environment Agency says

Esme Stallard, July 18, 2025

Excerpt: "Every year the Environment Agency records the number of times pollution such as untreated sewage is released from water company sites such as treatment works into the country's waterways.

Just three companies were responsible for the vast majority of the most serious incidents - #ThamesWater (33), #SouthernWater (15) and #YorkshireWater (13).

" 'These figures expose a brutal truth. Serious #pollution incidents are rising, #sewage discharges remain rampant, and our rivers are spiralling toward #EcologicalCollapse. This is not just regulatory failure; it is a national disgrace,' said #RiverAction CEO James Wallace."

Thames Water paid almost £2.5m to senior managers from an emergency loan that was meant to be used to keep the failing utilities company afloat – and has refused to claw back the payments.
The managers are due to receive the same amount again in December, and a further £10.8m collectively next June.

Nationalise Thames Water now.

I spoke to one of the crew working on it, and he said they're hopeful of getting it up and running again by morning, but also that they're planning on working on it overnight. Bottled water at Thornhill Park and Ride if it's not fixed.

The environment secretary, Steve Reed, has said the government is stepping up preparations for temporary nationalisation of #ThamesWater, indicating it will reject pleas from the company’s creditors for leniency from fines and penalties

Manipulating the market

I was unaware that a ‘vulture’ funds bought into Thames at 60%

The market value of the debt is already implying 30% writedowns. Some of the opportunistic vulture funds are thought to have got in at as low as 60p in the pound; Reed and Ofwat, the water regulator for England and Wales, would look like fools if they approved, in effect, hefty day-one paper profits for them.
