MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History July 15, 1954: Spanish fascist dictator Francisco Franco amended their vagrancy law to include LGBTQ people, including punishments of hard labor and detention in concentration camps, where they were routinely subjected to sexual violence. The majority of detainees were working-class gay men and trans women. It was not uncommon to hear upper class and aristocratic gays and lesbians refer to the dictatorship as a “great” historical period. Indeed, Salvador Dali continued to fawn over the fascist dictator until his death, in spite of the fact that Franco executed Dali’s own lover, the poet Federico Garcia Lorca, in the 1930s. And Andre Breton kicked Dali out of the Paris Surrealist Group for his fascist leanings.</p><p>Fascism continued in Spain up until Franco’s death, in 1975. Today, however, both Barcelona and Madrid are often described as among the most LGBTQ-friendly cities in the world. In 2005, Spain became one of the first countries in the world to legalize gay marriage. And Madrid’s Pride event is one of the largest in Europe, in spite of the fact that the city remains one of the most politically conservative regions of Spain.</p><p>You can see the trailer for Las noches de Tefía, about the concentration camp in the Canary Islands, that Franco used for LGBTQ prisoners: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5nk7ikWdUk" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=v5nk7ikWdU</span><span class="invisible">k</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/lgbtq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lgbtq</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/fascism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fascism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/spain" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>spain</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/dictatorship" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dictatorship</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/franco" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>franco</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/torture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>torture</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/prison" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>prison</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/concentrationcamps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>concentrationcamps</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/dali" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dali</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/lorca" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lorca</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/madrid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>madrid</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/barcelona" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>barcelona</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/homophobia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homophobia</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/transphobia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transphobia</span></a></p>
MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History July 14, 1933: the Nazi eugenics program began with the proclamation of the Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring requiring the compulsory sterilization of any citizen who suffers from alleged genetic disorders. The Nazi eugenics program was similar to, and inspired by, the eugenics program in the United States, which had begun in the late 1800s, and included forced sterilization of people deemed inferior, as well as anti-miscegenation laws. Hitler wrote that "There is today one state in which at least weak beginnings toward a better conception are noticeable. Of course, it is not our model German Republic, but the United States," in reference to the U.S. eugenics program. Though the Nazis took their program much further, with the mass extermination of people they thought were inferior, especially Jews, Roma, and anyone else that was not straight, cis and “Aryan,” as well as people with disabilities, communists, socialists and anarchists, both programs were based on the presumptions that certain groups of people were inferior, and that their elimination would improve the genetic stock. Forced sterilization, particularly of African-American women, continued well into the 1970s in many parts of the U.S. Early proponents of eugenics included many liberals, progressives, socialists, and even black activists including: Margaret Sanger, W. E. B. Du Bois, Hellen Keller, Clarence Darrow, George Bernard Shaw, 2-time Nobel Prize laureate Linus Pauling (including a Nobel peace prize).</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/eugenics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eugenics</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/nazis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nazis</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/fascism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fascism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/racism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>racism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/nobelprize" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nobelprize</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/hitler" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hitler</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/forcedsterilization" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>forcedsterilization</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/homophobia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homophobia</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/transphobia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transphobia</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/antisemitism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>antisemitism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/jews" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jews</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/lgbtq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lgbtq</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/roma" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>roma</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anarchism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/socialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>socialism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/communism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>communism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/abelism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>abelism</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History July 7, 1992: The New York Court of Appeals ruled that women had the same right as men to go topless in public. Currently, only 33 states truly permit women to go topless (<a href="https://gotopless.org/topless-laws" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">gotopless.org/topless-laws</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>), with complete bans still in effect in Utah, Indiana and Tennessee, and ambiguous laws in several other states. “Free the Nipple” is a campaign that challenges the convention that only men are allowed to be topless in public, while it is considered indecent for women to do the same. The campaign was started by filmmaker Lina Esco, who created a documentary of herself walking through New York City topless in 2012. </p><p>While it is currently legal for anyone to go topless in Washington, D.C., it is apparently considered disrespectful to flash your nipples at President Biden, at least if you’re nonbinary. In 2023, trans activist Rosa Montoya was invited to participate at the White House Pride event and took off her top. She was subsequently banned from future White House events and eventually issued an apology for behaving in a way that was “unbecoming” of a White House guest, in spite of her behavior being perfectly legal. Perhaps if she was still a teenager Biden would have sniffed her hair? </p><p>Meanwhile, in the UK, where, in 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that trans women do not meet the “definition” of women, it is still illegal for women to go topless in public. So, trans activists have been demonstrating topless there, creating a paradox, not to mention a lot of confusion and frustration, for the police and politicians who, under the state’s new definition of gender, cannot arrest them, though they desperately want to.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/feminism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>feminism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/nipples" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nipples</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/breasts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>breasts</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/TransRightsAreHumanRights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TransRightsAreHumanRights</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/lgbtq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lgbtq</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/biden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>biden</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/FreetheNipple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FreetheNipple</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/sexism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sexism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/transphobia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transphobia</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History July 2, 1951: Transgender revolutionary activist Sylvia Rivera was born. Ran away from home at age 11 to avoid abuse and did sex work to survive. As she got older, she became active in the antiwar movement and black liberation struggle, and then with the Gay Liberation Front. Together, with her friend Marsha P Johnson, and others, she co-founded Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries in 1970. This radical group helped raise funds to rent an apartment to house and support homeless queer youth. Much of that funding came from their sex work. She was very critical of the mainstream, middle-class, cis leadership of the gay rights movement, particularly when the 1986 Gay Rights Bill was passed without mentioning trans people. At the Christopher Street Liberation Day Rally in New York City, in 1973, Rivera jumped onstage during feminist Jean O'Leary's speech, which disparaged drag queens, and shouted: "Y'all Better Quiet Down! You go to bars because of what drag queens did for you, and these bitches tell us to quit being ourselves!" Today she is known as one of the leaders who made sure there was a T in LGBTQ.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/sylviarivera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sylviarivera</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/transgender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transgender</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/lgbtq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lgbtq</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/revolutionary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>revolutionary</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/stonewall" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stonewall</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/pride" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pride</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/transphobia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transphobia</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/sexwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sexwork</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/gayliberationfront" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gayliberationfront</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>In 2017, the City of San Francisco recognized the Compton's Transgender Cultural District, the world's first legally recognized transgender district, later renamed The Transgender District. This was the site of the 1966 Compton’s Cafeteria Riot, when trans women and drag queens fought back against police harassment and abuse. Susan Stryker called it "the first known incident of collective militant queer resistance to police harassment in U.S. In 1965, a group of queer and transgender youth and sex workers formed Vanguard, the first known gay youth organization in the United States. Street kids and Vanguard members would often meet at Compton’s and hang out there without buying anything because they were all broke. In response, Compton would kick them out and call in the police for support. This led Vanguard to organize a picket of the cafeteria in July, 1966, one of the first demonstrations against police violence against transgender people in San Francisco, and a precursor to the riot that would break out there the next month.</p><p>In the wake of the riot, Vanguard orchestrated several other street actions, like their "street sweep," when Vanguard members hit the streets of the Tenderloin with push brooms to protest police "sweeps" of queer neighborhoods like the Tenderloin and to symbolically critique the police practice of treating transgender and queer sex workers like "trash." Activists used the momentum of the picket and the riot to establish several community-based support services. The most successful of these was the National Transsexual Counseling Unit, established in 1968.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/lgbtq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lgbtq</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/trans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>trans</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/TransRightsAreHumanRights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TransRightsAreHumanRights</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/riot" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>riot</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/comptonscafetera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>comptonscafetera</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/sanfrancisco" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sanfrancisco</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/police" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>police</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/policebrutality" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>policebrutality</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/transphobia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transphobia</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/pride" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pride</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/pridemonth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pridemonth</span></a></p>
MikeDunnAuthor<p>The annual Trans March, held in many cities on the Friday before Pride weekend, commemorates San Francisco's 1966 Compton’s Cafeteria riot, when trans women and drag queens fought back against police harassment and abuse. One of the goals of the Trans March is to increase visibility, activism and acceptance of all gender-variant people. In San Francisco’s Trans march, people meet in Dolores Park for music, speeches, and celebration, before marching to the corner of Turk and Taylor, in the Tenderloin, the site of the now defunct Compton’s Cafeteria.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/lgbtq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lgbtq</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/trans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>trans</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/TransRightsAreHumanRights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TransRightsAreHumanRights</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/riot" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>riot</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/comptonscafetera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>comptonscafetera</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/sanfrancisco" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sanfrancisco</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/police" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>police</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/policebrutality" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>policebrutality</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/transphobia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transphobia</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>San Francisco indie bookstore, The Booksmith, collectively chose to stop selling Jk Rowling's books in June, 2025 after she launched a “women’s fund” in May aimed at dismantling transgender rights and proclaimed that the proceeds from the sales of her books would go toward these transphobic efforts. </p><p>“There’s a direct throughline between what [Rowling’s] doing with the money she’s making on book sales as a living author who’s still collecting royalties and something that, frankly, harms us and our trans siblings and people that we care about in our community,” said Booksmith co-owner Camden Avery. </p><p>Many have accused them of censorship, cancel culture and book banning.
