"Uber received a report of sexual assault or sexual misconduct in the United States almost every eight minutes on average between 2017 and 2022, sealed court records show, a level far more pervasive than what the company has disclosed.

Publicly, the ride-sharing service proclaimed it was one of the safest options for travel, with aggressive media campaigns and polished reports on its website about the rarity of serious attacks.

Inside Uber, teams of data scientists and safety experts spent years studying the problem. The company tested tools that proved effective at making trips safer, including sophisticated matching algorithms, mandatory video recording and pairing female passengers with female drivers.

Still, Uber delayed or did not require its drivers to adopt some of the most promising programs, nor did it warn passengers about factors it linked to attacks, according to interviews with more than a dozen current and former employees, internal documents and court records. Hundreds of the records have been under seal as part of large-scale sexual assault litigation against Uber.

Uber’s decisions about safety came as it prioritized growing its user base, avoiding costly lawsuits and protecting its business model, which classifies drivers as independent contractors rather than employees, the records show.

The distinction is important to Uber. Contractors are much cheaper than employees because the company does not need to pay benefits or overtime, and it also means drivers are minimally supervised and not subject to the same labor rules as traditional employees."

So having demonstrated over the last few years that its innovation is about exploiting workers (and denying them rights) rather than innovating technology, Uber is now confirming they're not a firm interested in actual innovation (rather than gaming working regulations), by launching a share buy-back - a sure sign that managers have no good ideas other than boosting dividends by reducing the number of shares issued!

Insane.

I’m reading the book by Marietje Schaake.

She mentions Uber’s Greyball program.

I had almost forgotten about it.

‘Once [Uber’s] software had spotted users close to law enforcement offices, the user was promptly served a different, tailor-made experience in a parallel app named Greyball… this made it nearly impossible for those users to get a ride.’

Update: After complaining loudly in chat with customer service, Uber ended up refunding the whole ride. I am glad they chose to do the right thing. I just wish it didn’t take so much work to get them to do so.

Uber would rather keep some money than make things right for a customer.

Yesterday’s ride had a tire fail about 30 minutes from our final destination. The driver, who was really nice, had to cancel the ride before getting us home. My daughter and I had to call for (and pay for) another ride to finally get home.

Uber charged me for the full ride even though we were about a dozen miles from the destination. When I asked for that to be reviewed and get a partial refund, they said no.

I don’t use ride share much, I am glad there is still competition because I will be using other ways of getting around instead of Uber.

The shortsightedness of Uber customer service to cling onto a money instead of making things right has lost them a customer and garnered them negative social posts about the experience.

I’m sure that me not using their service occasionally won’t hurt their bottom line. Nor will this post do much damage — though you can help spread it with a boost.

That’s the sad thing about large corporations, they don’t feel the repercussions of their bad behavior. It sucks.

But, I will still vote with my money and not give Uber any.
