KaiXinCame across the thread about <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=rust" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Rust</a> in <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FreeBSD</a> base today. Good read:<br><br><a href="https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-hackers/2024-January/002823.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The Case for Rust (in the base system)</a><br><br><a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=bsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BSD</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=runbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#RUNBSD</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=usebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#UseBSD</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=unix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Unix</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=foss" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FOSS</a><br>
KaiXinAlso I am curious about <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FreeBSD</a> with <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=ports" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ports</a> and <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=poudriere" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#poudriere</a>, how do you guys manage <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=firefox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Firefox</a> and possibly <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=libreoffiice" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LibreOffiice</a>? It took me~5h to compile <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=llvm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LLVM</a> default flavor on my laptop, I would just assume giants I listed above will take more than 10 hours? I still remember old days when I was using <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=gentoo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Gentoo</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Linux</a> and whenever there was updates for them I had to keep my PC on overnight...But nowadays <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=firefox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Firefox</a> seems to update more frequently, I dare not to compile few times a month.<br><br><a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=bsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BSD</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=unix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Unix</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=usebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#UseBSD</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=runbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#RUNBSD</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=foss" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FOSS</a><br>
KaiXinNow after successfully building and loading <code>drm-61-kmod</code> for <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FreeBSD</a> using <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=ports" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ports</a>, I am building the <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=xorg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#xorg</a> mininal port. Thanks all fedi friends for your help. <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=bsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BSD</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=unix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Unix</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=runbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#RunBSD</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=usebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#UseBSD</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=foss" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FOSS</a><br>
KaiXinEnjoyed reading about Eric's story about the past, present and future of <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=ghostbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#GhostBSD</a><br><br><br>GhostBSD: From Usability to Struggle and Renewal | FreeBSD Foundation<br><br><a href="https://freebsdfoundation.org/our-work/journal/browser-based-edition/downstreams/ghostbsd-from-usability-to-struggle-and-renewal/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://freebsdfoundation.org/our-work/journal/browser-based-edition/downstreams/ghostbsd-from-usability-to-struggle-and-renewal/</a><br><br><a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=bsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BSD</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=foss" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FOSS</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=unix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Unix</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=usebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#UseBSD</a> <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FreeBSD</a><br><br><br>
Alavi | علوی<p>Hey <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/bsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bsd</span></a> folks, do you suggest I use <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>freebsd</span></a> or <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/openbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>openbsd</span></a> for desktop usage?<br><a href="https://techhub.social/tags/usebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>usebsd</span></a></p>
KaiXin<p>More tests today: Following <a href="https://m.otter.homes/tags/OpenBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenBSD</span></a> and <a href="https://m.otter.homes/tags/FreeBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FreeBSD</span></a>, I tried <a href="https://m.otter.homes/tags/NetBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NetBSD</span></a> on my laptop today. I never expected but it was the best ever. <a href="https://m.otter.homes/tags/XDM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>XDM</span></a> started out of box with a nice <a href="https://m.otter.homes/tags/CTWM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CTWM</span></a> sesssion after login, WiFi connects after a few lines ifconfig commands. Suspending to S3 worked but resume resulted in no keyboard or touchpad response. Will look into this. <a href="https://m.otter.homes/tags/BSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BSD</span></a> <a href="https://m.otter.homes/tags/UseBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UseBSD</span></a> <a href="https://m.otter.homes/tags/Unix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Unix</span></a> <a href="https://m.otter.homes/tags/FOSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FOSS</span></a></p>
