In 2016 we booked a reasonably late deal cruise on the fairly new ship Royal Princess for a week in the Mediterranean. Mediterranean cruises are port-intensive ones so we had a stop on the very first day at Naples. We opted to take a tour that visited a cameo workshop then took us on a guided walk around Herculaneum. Herculaneum, like Pompeii, was buried under volcanic ash in 79 CE when Vesuvius erupted.

There I was sleeping in my bed
Vesuvius my home, just resting my head
Suddenly the mountain it did awake
And apparently sleeping was a big mistake
It appears a big cloud of superheated ash
Into my bedroom and through the window did crash
It was an event I did really quite disdain
However, out of it I got a glass brain

In A.D. 79, a man who died in Mount Vesuvius' eruption near Pompeii had a rare transformation: His brain seemingly turned into glass. Scientists haven’t agreed on the reason, but a team of researchers offers this explanation: The pyroclastic flows must have been immediately preceded by a superheated cloud of ash that first rapidly heated and then rapidly cooled the man's brain as it dissipated. Scary thought. @LiveScience has more:

The Herculaneum papyrus scrolls were carbonized by the heat from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the year 79, and discovered in 1752. Scientists have been attempting to decipher them ever since, with the first words being revealed last year. Now, a team at the University of Pisa has announced that the scrolls reveal Plato's burial place, and that the Greek philosopher did not enjoy the music played while he was on his deathbed. Here's more from CNN.
