Are you overworking as an academic?

I recently inventoried everything I was committed to doing and asked myself the following questions:

  • Am I contractually obliged to do this?
  • Has someone in a position of seniority directly asked me to do this?
  • Do I care deeply about this? Does it excite me?
  • Will I be letting a close colleague or friend down if I don’t do this?

It was surprising how many things I was doing for which the answer to this was ‘no’ 🤔

@ChrisMayLA6 scary how big the drop in #academic #proficiency in #Dutch #school children is...from near the top in 2018 to near the bottom end in 2022.

And this is a continuation of a trend of the last decades, not just Covid, still leading to no change/rollback in #policy

Increased ERC funding for top global researchers moving to Europe now confirmed

The European Research Council (#ERC) decision to increase its support for leading researchers moving to Europe has today been formally adopted. On top of its standard grants, the ERC offers additional 'start-up' funding to help new grantees establish their laboratories or research team in Europe. This funding is now being doubled from up to €1 million to up to €2 million. This will apply already in the ERC Advanced Grant competition, which is due to open on 22 May 2025.

The crosscurrents are unlike any that the #university has faced in its modern history. For centuries, #Harvard has cherished its #independence, its swaggering pride & its record of #academic excellence. But #Trump has reveled in unleashing #chaos that many believe will be difficult to contain as long as he sees the #university as a target.

On Mon, the Trump admin intensified the clash & threatened to choke off #grant money to Harvard indefinitely.

So late last month, Professor Salas-de la Cruz & Paul Boxer, a professor of psychology at Rutgers University-Newark, drafted a one-page “mutual defense compact.” It was a one-for-all, all-for-one statement of solidarity among #schools in the #BigTen athletic & #academic conference—18 large, predominantly #public #universities that together enroll ~600k students each year. “An infringement against one member university,” they wrote, “shall be considered an infringement against all.”

No shit Sherlock.

Cutting federal #funding for #scientific #research could cause long-run #economic damage equivalent to a major #recession, acc/to a new study from American University.
In recent months, the #Trump admin has sought to cancel or freeze billions of dollars in #grants to scientists at #Columbia, #Harvard & other #universities, & has moved to sharply curtail funding for #academic #medical centers & other institutions.

A #Harvard task force released a scathing account of the #university on Tues, finding that #antisemitism had infiltrated coursework, social life, the hiring of some faculty & the worldview of certain #academic programs.

A separate report on anti-#Arab, anti-#Muslim & anti-#Palestinian bias [#Islamophobia] on campus, also released on Tues, found widespread discomfort & alienation among those students as well….

So same-old-same-old white men are the best treated. Shocker.

The reports were hundreds of pages long, and could complicate the difficult balance Harvard faces as it grapples with reports of bias.
