The Last Psion | Alex<p>Decided to do some <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> terminal hopping.</p><p>This is my completely unscientific test: maximised window, tmux with a NeoVim session, paging quickly through some code. I wanted to see what the most CPU usage would be for these terminals. I'm testing on a Ryzen 7 7840U.</p><p>Why worry about CPU? Laptop users and low-power machine users will care about CPU usage. I'm trying to eke as much life out of my equipment as possible.</p><p><strong>Tests</strong></p><p><strong><a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/Alacritty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Alacritty</span></a> (with the Graphics patch)</strong></p><p>Unfocussed: 0%<br>Focused: 0% (briefly 0.6% at initial focus)<br>Active: 6.4%</p><p><strong>Notes:</strong> Just started using this. Line drawing seems better than Kitty to me. I think I slightly prefer the font rendering, too, although Alacritty will not render font ligatures. Has a Vi mode that I'm trying to get used do (although largely useless when using tmux).</p><p><strong><a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/Kitty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Kitty</span></a></strong></p><p>Unfocussed: 0%<br>Focused: 0%<br>Active: 7.6%</p><p><strong>Notes:</strong> Used most of the time recently, but many other OSes don't like being SSH'd into from it (I know you can set TERM, but the developer strongly discourages this). I do like CTRL-SHIFT-G to search through the output of the last command (although largely useless when using tmux).</p><p><strong><a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/Ghostty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ghostty</span></a></strong></p><p>Unfocussed: 0%<br>Focused: 0% (briefly 1.3% at initial focus, occasionally 0.6% blips)<br>Active: 19.1%</p><p><strong>Notes:</strong> My guess is the reliance on libadwaita makes this more heavyweight. I'm pleased that there's now a "maximize" config option - setting the window size to big numbers never worked properly for me in KDE Plasma</p><p><strong><a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/Konsole" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Konsole</span></a></strong></p><p>Unfocussed: 0%<br>Focussed: 0% (briefly 1.3% at initial focus)<br>Active: 31.2%</p><p><strong>Notes:</strong> I like Konsole and have used it for years, but it's just too CPU hungry.</p><p><strong>Final Thoughts</strong></p><p>I've been using a combination of Kitty and Konsole for a while, depending on my needs. This has felt cumbersome and I've wanted to find a fix for a while.</p><p>I'm going to give Alacritty with the Graphics patch a go for now. I've bound Meta-Enter to a windowed terminal (was Konsole) and Meta-Shift-Enter to maximised (was Kitty).</p><p>I really want to like Ghostty, but I do think the focus on libadwaita adds a burden to a system that many people don't need, plus a skew towards GNOME users. Granted, it's still less CPU hungry than Konsole, but it doesn't feel like the lightweight terminal app that people claim it to be. I'm looking forward to libghostty being released to see if someone makes a non-libadwaita Ghostty.</p>

Marcin Kulik<p>I also switched from default Gnome Console to <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/ghostty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ghostty</span></a>, which is fantastic new terminal. Brandon<p>I have a conflict in my workflow. I love using tmux, but I’m always unsatisfied with using it in new terminals. I try every new terminal because the graphical customization limits and tradeoffs of current ones feel awkward to me (I just want frameless alacritty with ligatures, damn it). But I find that every new terminal I try also has windowing features and keybinds for tabs and splits that I have to disable before I can give the terminal a fair shake in my use case. I’ve even configured Neovim so that it will pass certain keybinds through a plugin back to the tmux session so I can navigate tmux from a neovim pane in normal or insert mode. </p><p>Is it worth the effort to keep using tmux, or should I just pick a terminal and learn its windowing keybinds?<br>This would also be blown to hell if I swapped to a tiling window manager, as I’d have to migrate my tmux keybinds over to the WM config.</p><p><a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/tmux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tmux</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/neovim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>neovim</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/vim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vim</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/tiling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tiling</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/productivity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>productivity</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/kitty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kitty</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/alacritty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>alacritty</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/xterm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>xterm</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/wezterm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wezterm</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/terminal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>terminal</span></a></p>

release_candidate<p>It was surprisingly easy!<br>Most of the desktop tools that I use were included as packages.</p><p>I used <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/i3wm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>i3wm</span></a> and reused my dotfiles.</p><p>My <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/archlinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>archlinux</span></a> dotfiles were almost enough. Weirdly <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/alacritty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>alacritty</span></a> didn't like the TOML config file format. Had to use YAML.</p><p>Fonts, icons, etc have almost the same names as in Arch. Emoji fonts worked! I honestly didn't expect the emoji fonts working lol</p><p>The only thing that I miss is <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/NetworkManager" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NetworkManager</span></a>. What is the <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/NetBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NetBSD</span></a> alternative for NetworkManager?</p>
chfkch :nixos: :rust:<p>Today i had a little styling session for my <a href="https://ruhr.social/tags/terminal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>terminal</span></a> stuff. I chose a <a href="https://ruhr.social/tags/catppuccin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>catppuccin</span></a> mocha spinoff.<br><a href="https://ruhr.social/tags/HelixEditor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HelixEditor</span></a>: it was easy, well-documented, but alot of stuff to do<br><a href="https://ruhr.social/tags/Alacritty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Alacritty</span></a>: i just copied over a config from <a href="https://ruhr.social/tags/TOML" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TOML</span></a> to <a href="https://ruhr.social/tags/Nix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nix</span></a><br><a href="https://ruhr.social/tags/Zellij" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zellij</span></a>: same as alacritty<br><a href="https://ruhr.social/tags/GiTUI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GiTUI</span></a>: i copied a .ron file via <a href="https://ruhr.social/tags/HomeManager" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeManager</span></a> , which worked, but my colors are borked (the "button" colors are unreadable)</p><p>Have to invest some more time, maybe i can try to improve the docs <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@rusticorn" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>rusticorn</span></a></span> ?</p>
James Gayfer<p>I’m having the weirdest problem with text displaying clearly in my terminal (in <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a>, specifically <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Fedora" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fedora</span></a>).</p><p>Across multiple terminals (<a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/wezterm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wezterm</span></a> and <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/alacritty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>alacritty</span></a>) the colour red is almost illegible while other text remains sharp.</p><p>I thought it might be my display, but I’m able to use the same colour theme (Gruvbox) on MacOS through the same display no problem.</p><p>I’m suspicious it was an update that caused this, as I haven’t tweaked anything else.</p>
0mp at FreeBSD<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.nu/@n" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>n</span></a></span> Ctrl-H would delete the character to the left BTW. </p><p>So I'm using <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Alacritty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Alacritty</span></a> as a terminal and so my TERM is "alacritty" when I ssh. Now, if the server does not know what "alacritty" is, then my terminal sessions seems broken.</p><p>However, if I set TERM to xterm and open a new shell, then things start to work again:</p><p>exec env TERM=xterm sh</p><p>Pro tip: Sometimes Ctrl-H can be used to delete characters to the left.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/FreeBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FreeBSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/terminal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>terminal</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/shell" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>shell</span></a></p>
