49 years ago on December 19, 1974, Altair 8800 microcomputer kits go on sale.
The Altair 8800, featuring the Intel 8080 microprocessor with 8-bit capacity, was initially offered as a DIY kit for under $400. Input was via toggle switches, and output through LEDs on the front panel.
Despite its basic design, the Altair 8800 inspired Microsoft founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen to create the first microcomputer Basic for it. The Altair's success exceeded expectations, with over 2,000 units sold by the end of 1975
Here we go, the mother of all home computers. An #Altair8800 clone from #KniesnerElectronic in Braunschweig/Germany called #M100. The next Saturdays will show in which condition this donation is.

Finished my Altair 8800 clone build yesterday (few days delay getting a matching LED that I was missing).
Just finished configuring all the serial parameters on the IMSAI 8080 replica to use QTerm on there as my terminal access to the Altair. Works like a charm. :)
I loaded up the #Altair8800 core on the #MiSTer and gazed at it in wonder.
What would the geeks back then have made of an #FPGA becoming their treasure?
Okay, yeah, so I got a #MiSTer
I couldn't resist it.
So far it's been a ridiculous amount of fun and it is SOOO much better than emulators, I can't even begin to explain.
Now I just need to learn how to program the #Altair8800
