Spencer Beswick<p>What is the radical Left?</p><p>Despite real analytical and strategic differences, the radical Left is united by a shared endeavor to address the foundational roots of social injustices. It seeks to overthrow—not simply tweak—capitalist social relations.</p><p>Leftists work towards the common goal of a stateless, classless society characterized by collective self-determination, worker control of production, and individual freedom and dignity. </p><p>Anarchists are antistate or libertarian socialists who advocate the reorganization of society into voluntary federations based in social equality and individual freedom. Syndicalists, who overlap substantially with anarchists, believe that revolutionary unions should prefigure the new world and act as the vehicles to re-organize society.</p><p>The labels of socialism and communism are at times used interchangeably; it is often useful to think of socialists as those who pursue reformist strategies whereas communists advocate revolutionary seizure of state power by a vanguard party. </p><p>For a transnational account of the radical left in the Americas, check out my 2023 article "Radical Americas: A Hemispheric History of the Left," published in Left History: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Historical Inquiry and Debate. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History July 29, 1962: British aristocrat and fascist leader, Oswald Mosely, was beaten by antifascists in London’s east end. Even after police began to escort him away, activists from the antifascist 62 Group (AKA 62 Committee), led by Jewish, communist, and black activists, were able to pelt him with eggs, fruit and rocks. He later called a rally, which the activists successfully disrupted with shouts of “down with fascists.” The only people arrested were antifascist activists.</p><p>62 Group disrupted fascist meetings throughout the early to mid-60s, beating up or attacking fascists whenever they had the chance, much like the Jewish antifascist 43 Group did in the 1940s. As a result, they were able to significantly reduce the power and effectiveness of the fascists in the 1960s.</p><p>Mosely had been a Labor MP and junior minister from 1918-1931. As the leader of the British Union of Fascists, publicly supported antisemitism and tried to form alliances with Mussolini and Hitler. During the 1936 Battle of Cable Street, antifascist demonstrators including unions, anarchists, socialists, communists, liberals and Jews, prevented the BUF from marching through the East End of London. During World War Two, Moseley and his wife were imprisoned as threats to the national security.</p><p>Mosely is portrayed in numerous works of fiction, including the television series, The Peaky Blinders. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History July 29, 1900: Italian anarchist Gaetano Bresci assassinated King Umberto of Italy. He did it to avenge the scores of workers the army killed during the Milan insurrection of 1898, also known as the Bava Beccaris massacre. The authorities arrested Bresci. He was later found strangled in his cell at Santo Stefano Prison, on May 22, 1901. Anarchists regarded him as a martyr. His act of regicide inspired Leon Czolgosz to assassinate President McKinley.</p><p>Bresci was radicalized and drawn to anarchism from a young age. He began working in a textile mill, in Italy, at the age of 15. In his early 20’s, he was arrested for insulting a police officer and later served time for organizing a textile strike. In 1897, he emigrated to the U.S., getting a job at a silk mill in Patterson, New Jersey. There he married an Irish-American woman and had two children. He joined the Right to Existence Group, and co-founded and wrote for its newspaper, La Questione Sociale. Today in Labor History July 28, 2006: Illustrator Richard Mock died. He was best known for his illustrations in The New York Times from 1980 through 1996. His art also frequently appeared on the covers of the magazines Fifth Estate, Alternative Press Review & Anarchy: A Journal of Desire Armed.
